MILAN, Italy - Can't get to Milan to see Leonardo Da Vinci's masterpiece "The Last Supper?" As of Saturday, all you need is an Internet connection. Officials put online an image of the "Last Supper" at 16 billion pixels — 1,600 times stronger than the images taken with the typical 10 million pixel digital camera.

Cool would be if it projected a 3-D image of the painting into your room or if it allowed you to touch it and feel the texture of the painting.

Jesus, is this forum really populated with people that dense? Yeah, I enjoy the joke of paint by numbers a lot (good joke), but can nobody appreciate the magnitude of this here?

It's a good action painting (Night Watch was supposed to be the first). But, I can't see the imagery close up. Get alot of pixels. Those two guys are trying to pick up Mary M, Judas is being a kiss ass, and nobody ate their bread rolls. Oh, and the painting needs a good cleaning. Send in Merry Maids.

Even those who get to Milan have a hard time gaining admission to see the "Last Supper." Visits have been made more difficult by measures to protect it. Twenty-five visitors are admitted every 15 minutes to see the painting for a total of about 320,000 visitors a year. Visitors must pass through a filtration system to help reduce the work's exposure to dust and pollutants.
When I was in Florence at the Uffitzi Museum i was able to get as close as I like to The Annuciation, and other masterpieces, by Botticelli and Durer, etc.

The theories are:Let's look at each theory in turn:

If that knife is being held by John/Mary then he/she has arms like a gorilla! Would Leonardo have made a mistake like this? There's also the evidence of John/Mary's fingers intertwined in front of him/her!

In that case John, the youngest of the disciples is missing. The idea is that the hand belongs to John who is obscured by Peter and Judas. I find this very unlikely. If it were true - where exactly would John be?

The 'copies' suggest that this is the case and so too does this sketch by Leonardo - clearly that knife in the hand of Peter gave him some problems and he decided to practice.

Chinthee, this is a great post except for the whankers trying to be funny but proving the truth of "by their fruits yee shall know them.
I dont like any of those theories. #3 (you have 2 #1 explanations 's btw) if Peter he has a blue garment but the hand has a brown sleeve, I believe.
Judas seems to have a bicolored garment blue on right brown on left. The also is a rather large (grotesque)left hand reaching for a bun or plate, which seems to be that of Judas but it is much larger than his right hand appears to be. What are the theories on this? Thanks BR
I'm no bible thumper, raised Catholic but more agnostic/Buddhist today. But I have always loved studying art history and am fascinated with how art & architecture from every period and era reflects the prevailing culture. Da Vinci is in a class by himself obviously.

This is supposed to be the moment when Jesus, in the words of John says "Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me". The picture shows the reaction of the disciples to this.
I believe Judas has the knife twisted behind him. Have to go back and look at that hand.
the knife can't be in Judas hand for same reason it can't be John/Mary
That gnarled, better word than grotesque, hand is really creepy the more i look at it.
What about the three colors of garments on Judas?
The more I look at the painting or is it a fresco I begin to ask myself, self why are those people wearing so many clothes at the dinner table? er was it supper or lunch. only bread and wine, at least in the picture, = they didn't have much in the food kitty.
