Influence of Political Radio Talk-Shows

When I annually visit the U.S. I occasionally turn on the AM talk radio shows. They are very shallow and place more emphasis on entertainment and influencing minds, that giving opinion on facts. Yes, they claim their bias, but the distortions are disturbing. If you sit with google on your computer and listen to false-hoods spouted by these loud political talk-show hosts, you will uncover lies, and falsehoods. They are also very deceptive in reporting certain aspects of an issue, while ignoring other facets of an issue. While the uninformed American drives through snarled traffic, they being to internalize distorted messages, and false messages, assuming they are true.

Here is one example of many.

Good thread for the US Domestic Issues domain, IMO. I have fairly strong opinions about it.

But offering only one example will only guide this thread into another invective-filled slag match in which I'd rather not participate.

Post an opposing example alongside and you might facilitate some serious debate concerning the thread title.

speaking in broad generalities......this type of entertainment is very popular with lower middle class blue collar types . left wing talk radio isn't successful in the US because leftists have jobs that don't allow them to listen to talk radio all day long.

btw, it seems attaboy is a big fan of the 'savage nation'. it would be interesting to read his response to this particular lie from savage.

also, on another thread i posted a link which details how the drug addict rush limbaugh compared a purple heart recipient to a suicide bomber....because he had the temerity to disagree with limbaugh.

Surprising how many people chose to listen to this offensive drivel.
Are they no quality alternatives?

I'll find some other lies, propaganda, and distortions from the "other side."

As far as Mike Savage goes, He changed his name, and made misleading statements about Hezbollah and the KSA and Jordan's response to them in 2006. He also accused Nic Robertson of CNN of being biased towards Palestinians, and biased against Israel. I've never read or heard that from Nic Robertson.

Savage is a likely Cripto (real name Weiner) also accused Rep. Murtha of being "left-wing" and yelled it into the microphone several times, last year in 2007. I googled Murtha's voting record, over 30 years on gun control, defense, military, taxes, foreign policy, and education and he is not left-wing.

(No I don't have sources to cite other than my own ears and eyes).

Again Texpat, I'll look for the opposing propaganda and put it up tomorrow.

I had planned to post this:

I listened to him off and on during a two week stint. I think he is past his prime (or maybe he has always been that bad). He talks to fill space and some of the stuff is nonsensical. Literally, it's blabber. Time for him to retire or put in less time. He can't fill three hours of airtime.

Media Matters? That's the group that tried to link Limbaugh to the NYT op-ed by seven members of the U.S. Army. A very dishonest attempt on their part.

...but texpat posted a serious interest in the topic so I thought I'd wait before posting to see how the topic developed. Then ray came along... does ray show up drunk at people's houses too?

Stroller there are alternatives. National Public Radio (NPR) is one of them. It leans left by US standards. Programs run an hour with maybe three news stories covered within each program. One program will cover national and world news, another will cover an hour of black issues, an hour of arts and sciences and they also have a business hour. Yesterday, I listened to an interview with Chris Matthews ('Hardball with Chris Matthews,' Monday through Friday on MSNBC). I was suprised to hear Matthews voted for Bush the first time around. He's a big Clinton supporter but I never thought the falling out between Clinton and Gore would cause Matthews to vote Republican.

Our local public radio station is very well funded so it can afford to hire good journalists who in turn do good in depth local reporting of issues. The station also broadcasts an hour of the BBC.

When Larry Leavitt Jr. died late last month, he was buried in an Air Force uniform. In life, he wore it decorated with ribbons: three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and the Outstanding Airman of the Year ribbon, among other awards.
His obituary stated that Leavitt, 65, of Concord, had been a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. Family and friends said Leavitt, a captain, had been a prisoner of war at "the Hanoi Hilton," and he'd lost the use of his legs from a gunshot wound to his back.
But Leavitt was never a POW, according to records from the Department of Defense.
He did not win the Outstanding Airman ribbon, according to Air Force records, and a search for his military records at the National Personnel Records Center came up blank.
"I'm really shocked," said Barbara Sims, a friend from Concord. "He said he had a plate in his head . . . that his face had to be reconstructed, all the terrible things they did to him." She added, "The one thing that bothered me is that I didn't see any scars."
Leavitt is not the first man to lie about his service record. Hundreds have been investigated by the FBI for falsely claiming to have won the military's highest award for valor, the Congressional Medal of Honor, including an Illinois judge who displayed two unearned medals in his courtroom.
Last month, Atlantic City Mayor Bob Levy admitted he had never belonged to the Army's elite Special Forces, a claim he'd included on campaign materials. And more than 1,500 men have been caught falsely claiming to have been Vietnam War prisoners, according to the nonprofit research group, the POW Network.

"We only had 661 come home alive," said Mary Schantag, who started the network with her husband 17 years ago. "We have almost three times that number, and those are only the ones who are reported."
