Terrible loss. He was pure class and only 41 with a new baby girl.
Such a shame and loss. Far too young.
Nine people died including his 13 year old daughter. They were on their way to his sports academy in Thousand Oaks for a noon basketball game she was to play in.. Just a tragedy. One of the greatest gone. RIP Mamba...

The odds of dying in a private aircraft seem to be a lot higher than when using an airline. The owner of the Leicester football club went the same way a few months ago. Maybe it just appears that private aircraft go down more often ..... would be interesting to see the stats. in any case, RIP.

Because they’re used in risky operations. Most airplanes operate in a controlled environment of runways, set flight paths, and air traffic controllers. Helicopters, by contrast, are used to reach areas you can’t access by plane. They can land pretty much anywhere, which makes them useful for military operations, search and rescue, medical evacuations, and other dangerous missions. As a result, conditions can be unpredictable. Helicopters are more vulnerable than planes to bad weather. In war zones, helicopters are easier to shoot down than planes. And they fly lower to the ground—a helicopter’s maximum altitude without requiring pressurization is about 12,000 feet—making them more likely to encounter obstacles like buildings or hills that suddenly appear in the fog. (It doesn’t help that in emergency situations, the pilot is in a hurry.) Because of their primary uses, helicopters also tend to take off and land a lot more than planes; the vast majority of accidents in any aircraft occur during takeoffs and landings.
Helicopters also have a lot more moving parts than airplanes—and therefore a lot more things that could potentially malfunction. A helicopter has a main rotor, a tail rotor, a gearbox, and a drive shaft running the length of the aircraft. If any one of those things breaks down, the copter can spin out of control. The fact that these parts are in constant motion also means that the parts wear out more quickly.
Helicopters are trickier to handle than airplanes, too—at least for beginners. You have the cyclic control, a joystick used to move the copter forward and backward; the collective control, which lifts you up and down; the anti-torque pedals, which turn the nose horizontally; and the throttle, which controls the amount of power going from the engine. As a result, the rate of accidents during instructional flights, when pilots are just learning, is twice as high for helicopters as for airplanes: 12.69 accidents per 100,000 hours versus 6.08 accidents per 100,000 hours.
Do helicopters really crash more often than planes? Yes. Helicopters crash at a slightly higher rate than aircraft overall, according to data collected by the National Transportation Safety Board. General aircraft—airplanes, helicopters, balloons, blimps, and everything else—average 7.28 crashes for every 100,000 hours of flight time. The crash rate for helicopters alone is 9.84 per 100,000 hours. That means helicopters crash about 35 percent more often per hour in the air than your average aircraft. (Of course, not all planes are created equal: Single-engine piston planes are 10 times more likely to crash than jets.) Helicopter crashes, however, are less likely to kill you: The fatality rate in helicopter crashes is 1.3 deaths per 100,000 flight hours versus 1.4 deaths for aircraft in general.

^ Really. Only 40 miles. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but driving would have been the smarter option. I worked in Japanese tourism on the Great Barrier Reef and used to fly in helicopters quite often. They never felt safe - in fact, one of the machines I used to ride in went down a few years ago. One drowned of the 6 on board so could have been worse. I never liked flying in those things ..

Bryant's habit of using helicopters to avoid downtown Los Angeles' notoriously bad traffic was well known. During his playing career, he would charter a chopper to take him from his home in Orange County to Staples Center for Lakers home games.
A 2010 profile of Bryant, published in GQ Magazine, explained why he did it.
"It's a nice dash of glitz, a touch of showbiz that goes well with the Hollywood sign in the hazy distance. But sexy as it might seem, Bryant says the helicopter is just another tool for maintaining his body. It's no different than his weights or his whirlpool tubs or his custom-made Nikes," GQ wrote.
"Given his broken finger, his fragile knees, his sore back and achy feet, not to mention his chronic agita, Bryant can't sit in a car for two hours. The helicopter, therefore, ensures that he gets to Staples Center feeling fresh, that his body is warm and loose as mercury when he steps onto the court.

Aircraft especially helicopters go through incredible maintenance. As an example Air Force One the plane the US president flies was manufactured in 1987. Some of the helicopters know as Marine One date back to 1987.Quote:

Bryant flew from Los Angeles back to Eagle, Colorado, to surrender to police. He was immediately released on $25,000 bond, and news of the arrest became public two days after that. On July 18, the Eagle County District Attorney's office filed a formal charge against Bryant for sexual assault. If convicted, Bryant faced probation to life in prison.
On July 18, after he was formally charged, Bryant held a news conference in which he adamantly denied having raped the woman. With his wife, Vanessa, at his side, he confessed, in tears, to having an adulterous sexual encounter with her, but insisted that everything that happened between the two had been consensual.[6][7] In late July, Bryant gave a diamond ring worth $4 million to his wife.[8][9][10]

he was a great basketball player...and a crappy teammate. he also paid an out of court settlement of an undisclosed amount and apologized to the woman who said he raped her.
