California law bans for-profit, private prisons

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Friday that would eliminate private, for-profit prisons, including those used for immigration detention, by 2028.


Starting on Jan. 2020, the state's Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation won't be able to enter into or renew a contract with a private, for-profit prison to incarcerate people.



Operating a private immigration detention facility and incarcerating people in for-profit prisons will be prohibited after Jan. 2028, according to the newly signed law.


"During my inaugural address, I vowed to end private prisons, because they contribute to over-incarceration, including those that incarcerate California inmates and those that detain immigrants and asylum seekers," Newsom said in a statement. "These for-profit prisons do not reflect our values."

I though the private "for-profit" prisons were born of the fact that we have far more prisoners than prisons?

So, does this mean California's going to build more state owned government prisons? or, just release prisoners to make room for newly sentenced prisoners?

It was due to states trying to get out of the prison business and turn it over to the capitalists to do it better. ‘Twas a bad idea. With private owned prisons, the emphasis is on keeping people in jail to maximize profits as opposed to rehabilitation.

Remember the judge sending innocent kids to juvie just to put money in his pocket from kickbacks from his prison contractor pal?

Your prison population is absurdly large because of stupid drug laws, and it is normally Republican politicians that use private prisons, as most of the robbing bastards are on the take.

Yup.


Also worth mentioning is the number of kids that are sentenced to Life Without Parole. Well, adults now that were sentenced to LWOP as a child.


1 of only 2 countries in the World to do so. Forget the other one now. Or if it still exists. As it might have been torn apart by bongo-bongo rebels, dived up and renamed by now.
