Tesco Lotus to discontinue foam food container usage

BANGKOK, 31 May 2019 (NNT) - Let’s take a look at the efforts to reduce single-use food container to reduce waste. From 1st July onward, shoppers at Tesco Lotus supermarkets will no longer see any food container made of foams. The shopping centers have also introduced plastic bottles and cans recycling machines allowing customers to gain points from recycling.


The plastic bottles and cans recycling machines allows consumers to dispose of unused plastic bottles and cans in exchange for Club Card points. The machines are being rolled out across Tesco Lotus supermarkets to help reduce waste from single-use food containers, as part of the supermarket’s Rethinking Packaging campaign.


From 1 July 2019 onward, Tesco Lotus will discontinue the use of food containers made of foams, which will be replaced with those made of recycled materials, as another effort to reduce waste from single-use food containers.


Tesco Lotus’ Corporate Affairs Director Salinla Seehaphan said the company will be launching a campaign reducing environmental effects from packaging on this year’s World Environment Day 5 June 2019. The campaign will promote the use of bio-degradable thermoformed containers, in addition to no plastic bags campaign, and the recycling of used items into reusable grocery bags.


The Department of Environment Quality Promotion Rutchada Suriyakul Na Ayutya has thanked government agencies and private firms in a network consisting of 43 organizations for their cooperation and their awareness of environmental issues. The department’s Altruistic Hearts environmental campaign has so far reduced 1.3 billion plastic bags since July last year.
