Don’t worry about Bangkok floods now

(BangkokPost.com) – The Irrigation Department has admitted that there was a possibility that Bangkok could be struck by severe floods in the future but city dwellers should not worry about that problem now.

Deputy Director-General of the Irrigation Department Peerapong Suwanmontree was responding to a statement made at the United Nations that Bangkok could face floods in the next 10-15 years.

“According to Irrigation Department findings, the gradual shifting of land means that if floods were to leave Bangkok permanently submerged, it will happen slowly,” he said.

“For the time being, all those involved are well prepared for any possible floods that may strike the capital at any given moment and they guarantee that the catastrophe will not be as severe as last year’s.”

“Whether or not we need to build more dams along both sides of the Chao Phrya river remains to be seen. If sinking holes start to appear, then we may need to start protecting the capital in the long run.”

That is great news, I have been worried about the whole of Bangkok suddenly dropping 5 meters overnight and being permanently submerged. That would seriously affect my weekend shopping trips to the Emporium.

Guarantee? Based on what - your local fortune teller? You can't guarantee Bangkok not being leveled by a small asteroid impact tomorrow morning, so how the heck can you predict the severity of future flooding? Wishful thinking - that's all this is.

Well, well, we do agree on some things. On the above post I agree with you 100 percent. Given how long it takes to get a large government job done in any country they should have already started. Not say, let's not do anything now.

Time to dig up the klongs again and restore Bangkok to its former glory as "the Venice of the East"!:)

I do remember those days . . well, looking at old photos anyway.

My parents were posted here in the early 60's and I decided to be born here . . . our house was on Sukhumvit Soi 13, I believe, backing onto a Klong . . .

Beautiful place then - probably because the population was 'tiny'.
