Cooperative Promotion Dept, KTB develops card for cashless payments on coop products

BANGKOK, 28th February 2018 (NNT) - The Cooperative Promotion Department has cooperated with Krung Thai Bank (KTB) to develop a co-op member card program, allowing cardholders to buy cooperative products without using cash.

The Adviser to the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Theera Wongcharoen, said a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by the two parties to provide cards for members of cooperatives. The cards can be used instead of cash to buy products at all cooperative stores nationwide.

Electronic data capture (EDC) machines will be used by cooperative stores to process card payments. The cards must be renewed every three years and can be topped up at KTB. The cardholders can also use it to withdraw money from any ATM.

The co-op card is in response to the government's e-payment policy. It will be introduced to members of cooperatives in 822 districts nationwide. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is also considering a plan to turn it into a visa card.
