DEQP to increase forest areas by 40% in 20 years

BANGKOK, 30 January 2018 (NNT) - Thailand's Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) has set a target of increasing green areas in Thailand by 40%.

DEQP Deputy Director-General, Surachai Achalaboon, presided over the meeting, which was held to promote forest and tree growing in cities and communities nationwide.

Director of the Office of Public Participatory Promotion, Weerawat Prapasaro, said the development of green areas nationwide is part of the administration's 20-year national strategy, which has been incorporated into the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan. He asserted that promoting green areas would lead to the restoration of the country's ecosystems.

The government is also determined to increase forest areas by 40% by applying its Pracharat, or public-private partnership approach. Forests currently cover an area of over 16 million hectares or approximately 32% of Thailand. More than 3,000 local public organizations will coordinate on the reforestation effort.
