Chinese experts give blessing to 600 km/h maglev train project

Transport system completes expert review, moves into construction design stage with target testing date of 2020

hina is planning to develop a high-speed maglev train with a speed of 600 kilometers per hour by 2020, Yicai.comreported.


The technical scheme of the high-speed maglev transport system has passed the review of 19 experts on Thursday. The R&D for the project is led by CRRC Sifang Co. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CRRC, the largest rolling stock manufacturer in the world.


Ding Sansan, the deputy chief engineer, said they will now move into the stage of construction design, as the technical scheme has been reviewed.


According to the schedule, they will develop the prototype of one carriage in 2018. While the whole car sample will be tested over a five-kilometer route by 2020.


The high-speed maglev transportation system is one of the key projects under the Ministry of Technology’s Thirteenth Five-year Plan to promote advanced rail transit.

Doesn't seem long enough. Acceleration, deceleration, I doubt it would get up to speed.

I think the highest speed ever for a Maglev train is 603kph so I'd be surprised if this new one intends to run at that speed.

More coal fired power stations needed to power it?

I think the technology is such that there is less of a carbon footprint with maglev.

How far does the Shanghai maglev require to get to 430 kph?

They already have this maglev speeding along.

Siemens built the Shanghai one and supplied many early high speed train projects, now CRRC are twice as large as Siemens and Alstom combined and are trying to copy the best of the technology.

This is just another catch up by copy initiative by the Chicomm, they already have one to copy.

True but credit to effort and money invested in infrastructure. Many western countries with crumbling infrastructure should take note.

Should have had a longer term view and removed the appropriate contract clauses.

Hopefully the new and faster Maglev goes a longer distance than the current one. I’ve been on the Maglev and it is good, but only goes 19 miles only in Pudong. So for those of us living on the other side of the river it is sort of useless.
