A painting of Christ by Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci has sold for $US450 million ($591 million) at auction in New York,
obliterating previous records.

Key points:

• The long-lost painting, Salvator Mundi dates, from around 1500
• The New York auction smashed the previous record of $US179.4m for art
• Auction house Christie's has not named the buyer

The 500-year-old oil painting depicting Christ holding a crystal orb, called Salvator Mundi — or Saviour of the World — is one of
fewer than 20 paintings by Leonardo da Vinci known to exist.

The 66-centimetre-tall painting dates from around 1500 and shows Christ dressed in Renaissance-style robes, his right hand raised
in blessing as his left hand holds a crystal sphere.

Makes no sense at all; an art expert on LBC said that authenticity is guaranteed for a set period, can't remember 10 or 12 years.
