MOL confirms no migrant child laborers under 15 employed

BANGKOK, 24th September 2017 (NNT) – The Labor Minister has confirmed that no migrant children under 15 are employed as laborers, and no migrant children under 18 from Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar are allowed to work overtime, engage in dangerous work, or be employed in entertainment venues.


Following a news report that Myanmar does not issue certificates of identity (CI) to migrant children under 18, Labor Minister Gen. Sirichai Ditthakul explained that CI issuance is under the authority of the country of origin. Migrant workers who hold a CI are only allowed to work as laborers or household maids.


Under the Labor Protection Act, employers are prohibited from employing children under 15 and they are only allowed to employ migrant children under 18 to perform non-dangerous work.


The Ministry of Labor has never allowed migrant children aged 15-18 to work overtime, work on holidays, or work in places that are prohibited by the Labor Protection Act. These include slaughterhouses, places where food, liquor, tea, or other beverages are sold and served, and premises offering massage service to customers.
