About 20 minutes ago, a military jet came screaming over Chalong at a very low height, sonic boom had our 3 dogs terrified and running into the house. Went out and saw the jet in the distance doing a barrel roll.
10 minutes later, reports started to come through of a plane crash, in Hat Yai I think:

Unconfirmed reports the pilot ejected before crashing.

Saw the headline and was scared that the crash might be at the Sattahip Airshow at U-Tapao. -My missus and son gone their this morning for the Children's Day event.

the pilot probably dozed off.
My wife, son and nephew all went to the air show in Udon Thani. Same concerns as kmart. Hopefully they don't fly their planes like they drive their cars.

Normally on Kids Day have jets flying over every 15-30 mins until late afternoon.

Gripen jet pilot posthumously promoted an air marshal
The Royal Thai Force has awarded the pilot who was killed when his Gripen fighter jet crashed during an air show in Hat Yai on the Children’s Day on Saturday a seven-step posthumous promotion, making him an air marshal.
The body of the pilot, Group Captain Dilokrith Patthavee, was flown from Hat Yai to the Don Meuang airport on Saturday where he was received by Air Chief Marshal Chom Rungsawang, the air force commander-in-chief, and guards of honour.
Besides the posthumous promotion, the family of the deceased pilot will receive monthly welfare fund amounting 30,000 baht and other fringe benefits totaling 2.78 million baht.
A funeral is held on Sunday at Wat Phra Sri Mahatat in Bang Khen.
Regarding the plane crash, ACM Dilokrith said he expected the result of the cause of the plane crash within two months. He maintained that the air show on Saturday in Hat Yai was normal training flight and not an acrobatic air show .

BTW He was first reported as a Sqn Ldr, now a Grp Capt (2 ranks above) and posthumously an AM, which is another 2 step up. Seven steps would have made him a Royal!
Promotion increases the pension for his family.
They have had this aircraft for a couple of years now and he presumably was well trained and quite proficient. If pilot error is not an issue then one must assume mechanical failure arising from faulty maintenance or possibly a design fault.
On googling I see RTAF in fact began training in Sweden in 2010 and one could reasonably assume therefore the pilot was experienced.
Apparently a Swedish NGO in Sweden lodged a police complaint against the Swedish authorities in 2015 alleging corruption in the supply of the Gripen contract to the RTAF, details of which are still concealed from the Swedish public.
Bit of a surprise that, eh.
