Murder mystery at Koh Larn, Pattaya

At 2.30pm, on the afternoon of December 16, Pattaya police received reports of a body floating in the water 500 meters off Samae Beach, Koh Larn, Pattaya.

At the scene police officers and Sawangboriboon medics discovered the body of a white, western male wearing a black diving suit and flippers. His throat had been cut and, bizarrely, the backpack he was wearing had been tied to a concrete pier-pole.

The unidentified man, approximately 170-175cm in height, was carrying only 1,500 baht in cash in his back pack.

The body was retrieved from the water and has been sent to Banglamung Hospital for autopsy.

Investigating officers admit that, at this stage, they have no idea who he is, how he died or why his body was tied to the pier-pole.

Pattaya police have asked for anybody with any information to come forward and make a statement and for any guest-houses or hotel to report any missing guests.

Clearly not robbery as the 1500 baht would not have been in his pocket. Hardly surprising that he had tied his backpack to a pole as he could not dive with it on his back. Accidental death caused by swimming into a pier support. The throat is the most vulnerable spot on a diving suit as there is usually a gap between the rubber cap and the suit which is not protected by rubber.

Dangerous Thailand. This is unreal because I remember last month another body was found in exactly the same way, only the backpack of this one had rocks inside. How is the Police investigation involving the first one going.

Could have been a demented diver on his uppers (or down on his flippers) who secured himself to the pier and then cut his own throat whilst in extremis. We need a knife found at the scene.

BANGKOK - A diver found with his throat slashed and tied to a post in the middle of the sea near a seedy beach resort may be Russian, police said Monday.
The body, in a full wetsuit and flippers, was found on Friday tethered to a mooring post dozens of metres out to sea off Koh Larn -- an island near the sleazy, crime-ridden beach town of Pattaya.

The macabre case has baffled detectives who say they are unable to ascertain how he died.

"The initial autopsy found his throat was slashed... but the forensic doctor said it could have happened by suicide or by someone cutting him," Pattaya police colonel Apichai Krobpetch told AFP.

"We believe he could be Russian... there are witnesses who said they heard him earlier speaking Russian," he said, adding they were seeking consular help to identify the man.

Koh Larn is a short boat ride from Pattaya -- a town located a few hours south of Bangkok and notorious for its go-go bars and links with organised crime.

The town is popular with Russian holidaymakers, who are met with Russian-speaking staff in some hotels and menus and street signs written in their language.
But its permissive atmosphere and sprawling red light district also hides a dark side.
Pattaya is infamous as a bolthole for criminals from across the world, including Russian underworld figures.

Have to say that I stayed in a Russian run Pattaya hotel back in 2012 ...cheap and basic but served excellent breakfast tea.

Main highlight was seeing some very decent Russian minge in the hotel pool. Some very presentable tits as well. Not sure what I was being offered as I am not conversant with the lingo but the view was pleasant enough for the wife to get extra rations....

Police identified the deceased as Frank Thomas, a 52-year-old American national. The man was said to have entered the kingdom in 2013 and had family here. Thomas’ body was found near Koh Larn on Dec. 16, and police had been pleading for information to determine his identity.
