Re-cycling

I do my best and wonder how this society can move forward

In other places there are education campaigns

There are whole businesses in Oz and UK making profit out of our trash

I suppose example and schooling must have a role

Luckily here there is less packaging and consumption than richer places but as we all know the roadsides are littered with trash

When I was young beer and lemonade bottles had a deposit so none were broken or binned, we'd collect I think a dozen ? Enough to get a new bottle of soda



In backward bogs of the Emerald Isle introducing a 20 cent chrge on supermarket bags reduced consumption by 90%, Folks take their own sack or a cloth bag each time.

However I suppose recincarnation and apathy is a mountain to climb.I think the cash incentive is the best carrot here.

P.S Is there anywhere to recycle used domestic AA and AAA batteries, none here

There's plenty of recycling done in Thailand, David. I'm surprised you haven't noticed it. Put some plastic bottles and cardboard boxes outside your house and I'm sure someone will take them away soon enough to sell them to a recycling centre.

It's become all the rage in most communities now in the last 7-10 years.

There are more and more recycling-types that ply the cities, provinces, and amphors.....and a great deal of the citizenry abide by putting all aside for 'em until they come around - less to speak of the growing "recycling centres" that have sprung up over the years in provincial/amphoe locales....

That is when you put it out. I agree the "saling salang" guys on old 3 wheel bikes are the best. 30+ years of doing the right thing. Sadly most still poor as hell.

The problem lies in the average home here. There is no separation of plastic, paper, foam, small can or tins, bottle caps, and the such. Sure beer, coke cans and bottles get taken care of, newspapers as well. But after that. :confused:

Yes there used to be a cardboard glass and metal wallah but hes vanished.
Agree there is a bit but a bag tax and of course tyres a haven for mozzies etc

Batteries are indeed difficult to get rid of the propper way. Sometime ago i asked in a central shopping mall if there was a collection point. There was none according to information counter. Then i submitted an idea in their suggestion box to start one. Now, 1yr later, i bring my dead batteries to this information counter and they accept them. I have no knowledge or proof what they do with it. I hope they go for recycling. Ofcourse the girl behind the counter doesn't know. There is also, as far as I know, no advertising on this. Guess they don't want to do this on a large scale....

Not surprising that it's Canadian...The mozzies up here will eat you alive in the summer...Huge bastards...But the advantage is that you can swat them more easily...Heh...The Thai counterpart seems almost invisible at times...

Either way, they are crafty barstards...If you're "swarmed" in the evening after a rain here, it is most unpleasant...Can make a healthy person feel feverish in no-time...

Years ago, out in the woods at night, we turned off the radio under our mosquito nets and heard a loud collective buzzing that surprised me, it was that loud...

The little buggers were screaming for our blood...'Kin hell...

Found another battery dumping place. In the AIS shop, in their so called serenade section. This was in Central mall Salaya. Don't know of other locations.

My sister lives in Islington where its now compulsory to separate everything into different bags/boxes and can only be put out on fridays

Asia and Thailand have one of the best recycling schemes anywhere. Nothing of any value in the garbage goes to waste.

Many waste plastic washing sites in BKK. People sifting through garbage collection centres looking for anything of value.

Indian Thais running businesses that shred up bottles and ship the compressed RPET bales to the USA of A, where all plastic bottles must contain X% recycled material.
Yes. Because of US laws thousand and thousands of tons of shredded recycled water bottles are shipped across oceans to ease the conscience of US housewives who don't use tap water anymore and only buy bottled water.

How many batteries do you have ? If it eases your conscience to drop them off somewhere so that those people can throw them in the garbage so be it. Stop using the fecking things. Only us rechargable ones. My mouse is running on 10 year old rechargeable!

Dry season maybe but then the mosquito disappear as they is no where to lay . Also this trap involves work which as we know...

I have a little 180 baht blue light and fan contraption on the floor of my office. No mosquitoes in there. Should really have one in every room.

Trying to get the family to separate compost material from rubbish material has been a never ending problem. The fact I have a compost heap at all is enough.

We also have a guy come round for plastic, cardboard and metal. Water is by the crate now rather than the 15litre bottles.

Still no rubbish collection...we burn every few days.

Agree 100% with the Thai's recycling habits.
At the Farm, anything of value is sorted into 3 different bags and every couple of months some guys drops round to buy the material.

What is left, is burnt. No garbage collection out our way.


About the mosquito trap, we have one of them in the bedroom, it's a white light, not blue one ... not so effective though.

Thais have been doing the mosquito trap for ages. A black bucket or urn with water in it.
Feed the fish in the pond with the wrigglers. Just fish them out with a fine net.

Do fish eat all?

Fish farmers have been feeding mossie larvae to certain types of fish for years. Funnily enough, those places where it occurs are usually top of the dengue cases also.

Condoms can be washed out and reused, not flushed down the toilet
