Police Wednesday morning seized 53 tour buses and 29 speedboats in Phuket’s Muang district from companies under the network of Tranlee Travel Co Ltd.

The searches of three locations by 100 police and relevant officials took place yesterday after arrest warrants were issued for two Tranlee executives, Weerachai Kampaipraphankul and Krisakorn Rungmongkolnam, for allegedly being foreigners who assumed Thai nationality to register a tourist business there.

Police impounded 29 speedboats from Insee Marine Co Ltd's pier, 53 tour buses from TL Better Way Co Ltd's parking lot, and seized related documents from Racha Spa Co Ltd to check the network's financial transactions. Phuket police chief Police Maj-General Theerapol Thipcharoen who led the operation said that the actions did not affect tourists who bought tour programmes from the network as they had reserved boats and buses to transport them.

Police and officials had raided Tranlee and arrested Krisakorn on June 15 (although Weerachai remains at large). The raid followed months of investigation that found many companies in the network allegedly had Chinese or other foreigners using fake identification cards to register the businesses and to register them as shareholders.

Police also claimed that these companies earned over B150 million in revenue but paid only B200,000 in tax a year.

THE ANTI-MONEY Laundering Office (AMLO) has seized additional assets worth Bt800 million belonging to the network of Phuket-based tour operator Tranlee Travel Co Ltd, AMLO chief Pol General Chaiya Siri-amphankul said yesterday.

Earlier this year, Tranlee Travel senior director and shareholder Kritchakorn Roongmongkolnam was arrested on charges of using fake credentials to acquire Thai nationality and set up the firm, while his business partner Weerachai Kampaiprapankul remains at large.

Kritchakorn has been charged with racketeering, which is within AMLO's scope of investigation, Chaiya said. The probe had led to more accomplices resulting in the seizure of 12 assets worth Bt800 million, including three land plots in Phuket and seven properties in Phang Nga's Koh Yao district.

Previously, AMLO had impounded 204 assets belonging to Tranlee worth Bt400 million, he added.

There is a big difference between legal foreign investment and people from overseas countries coming in and setting up companies with false identities.

Second auction of assets seized from zero-dollar tour operator on Nov 1 in Phuket

The Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) will auction off assets seized from major zero-dollar package tour operators on November 1 at the conference hall of Phuket municipality.

Altogether 39 items of assets of Tran Li Travel Company which include 33 tour buses, six tourist boats will be put on auction with the starting bid price set at 43 million baht.

Zero-dollar tour operators sell below-cost package tour to Chinese tourists visiting Thailand and when the tourists are in Thailand, they will try to squeeze as much money as possible from the tourists by forcing them, for instance into jewelry shops outrageously overcharge them for every piece of jewelry sold.

Those who are interested to join the bidding can ask to inspect the items on October 31 from 9.30 am to 3 pm at Saeng-arun pier of Phuket Boat Company. They can also find more information about the items to be auctioned from Amlo’s website, www.amlo.go.th

The first auction was held on September 6-8, also at Phuket municipality. 151 items of assets worth about 108 million baht were put on auction.

AMLO secretary-general Pol Gen Chaiya Siri-amphankul said keeping the seized assets required space for safe keeping and it incurred expenses which would be a burden for AMLO. Also, some of the assets would depreciate the longer they were kept in storage, he added.
