US Boeing to Sell Iran 100 Airliners

The U.S.-based giant aviation corporation Boeing has reached an agreement with Iran to sell the country 100 passenger planes, Iran’s aviation authority announced Sunday.

The deal is one of three separate agreements made between Iran and Western plane makers for a total of around 200 aircraft since Washington lifted economic sanctions on the country in January.

"We have 250 planes in the country, 230 need to be replaced," said Ali Abedzadeh, the head of Iran's civil aviation body, though he added there is no set timeline for the delivery of the planes.

Most of Iran’s civil aviation fleet is in a state of disrepair and in desperate need of replacement, but Boeing is still waiting on final authorization of the deal from the U.S. Treasury, Abedzadeh said.

The contract for the Boeing planes is worth an estimated $17 billion, and should it be completed, would be the first time Iran bought planes from Boeing since before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In January, Iran reached a preliminary agreement with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus to purchase 118 planes, though that deal is also awaiting approval from the U.S. Treasury.

Approval from U.S. officials is required since more than 10 percent of Airbus materials are of American origin.

what justification or authority do the americans have over an eu-iran deal?

do the europeans have to give their approval over the boeing deal? i thought not, so how come the americans have to approve a eu-iran trade deal.

Maybe if the US impose sanctions on someone they can reserve the right to impose their own sanctions on people who bust them.

Either that or it's a UN Security Council/P5+1 thing.

Plenty of US technologies involved still under sanctions. Sound like the US trying to have the cake and eat it once again. Can only hope this deal goes through and acts as a breakthrough on the US stranglehold.

I'd feel your outrage too....but the article explained, "...because over 10% of the Airbus parts are of US origin..."

100 airliners, 10% of the parts for further 118 airliners. More than a few hundred bucks in that lot.

Sounds like the US not wanting to hand over all the business to Airbus to be honest.

Well exactly that yes... but should the deal go ahead it sets the precedent for other companies to also trade with Iran. Many companies, including my own, would like to see the Iranian market open up... so this can only be a positive step.

Yikes, would not like to be flying anything Iranian before the new kites arrive.

Ok this was only a poster on here, but the point is, why worry about approval to sell planes to Irak, if the simple issues at home are so difficult to get strait?

yup not see much Iraq Air or Iran Air on the airports i passed this last decade...

Was in Serbia last month and spotted some weird planes like Air Croatia, prolly black listed in West...

Iran or Iraq could come out as cheap fares seen the oil price in this places, but will take some time for outsiders to accept fly with them.

Went often to Iraq before 2000, gazole was 1 cent a liter, paid 80 liter fill up with a dollar note and got 20 cents back-

Kuwait still only 15c a liter and strongest currency in the world.. go figure.
