Foreign workers to be checked for legal compliance

BANGKOK, 13 June 2016 (NNT) – Authorities are preparing to run an inspection on foreign workers with pink cards in a bid to ensure their compliance with the law while a new type of permit will soon be issued to facilitate the workers’ examination process.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan presided over a meeting of the Committee on Foreign Worker and Human Trafficking Resolution Policies, during which relevant agencies were instructed to stringently check all foreign workers who were previously given pink cards so as to make sure they are not engaged in illegal jobs or working in unpermitted fields.

On this occasion, the attendants were informed of the Labor Ministry’s plan to put into use a new version of work permit that contains all important information about the holder, including the employer’s name, the type of work and places permitted for employment. The plan is set to be considered by the Cabinet soon and, once implemented, is expected to establish better management of foreign workers in Thailand.

Moreover, with an aim to speed up their registration process, foreign workers will be allowed to register immediately after receiving health examinations without having to wait for the results. However, should the results point to dangerous diseases, their work permit could be terminated.

The meeting also agreed to set up assistance centers for foreign workers in border areas as a way of facilitating their journey in and out of the country.
