Saudi officials: Crane collapse at Mecca Grand Mosque kills at least 107

A crane collapsed on the main mosque in Saudi Arabia’s holy city of Mecca on Friday, killing at least 107 people and injuring more than 238, officials said, less than two weeks before the beginning of the annual hajj Islamic pilgrimage.


The crane crashed through a roof at Mecca’s Grand Mosque during a heavy rainstorm, leaving piles of debris, jagged rubble and bloodied victims on the marble floors.
Images on social media showed dazed survivors, and the injured and dead being dragged across blood-streaked floors.
A video posted on Twitter appeared to show the crane collapsing with a loud boom, followed by screams and confusion among the worshipers.


An Al Jazeera reporter in Mecca said the crane toppled onto the third floor of the Grand Mosque about 5:45 p.m. local time, when the mosque was packed with people awaiting the 6:30 p.m. prayer.


Dozens of ambulances raced to the site, and authorities closed off the area.
Lt. Gen. Suleiman al-Amr, head of the Civil Defense Directorate, said strong winds and rain uprooted trees and affected cranes in the area, Reuters news agency reported.

Yes Stinky I realise that but don't you think it's a hell of a coincidence on the 14th anniversary.

A little ironic maybe but accidents happen every day of the year, there isn't any kind of karmic justice in this it's just tragic.

well you do have to admit that there is an unnerving element of coincidence in the fact that on the anniversary of 9/11, an object belonging to the bin laden group flies (drops) into a mosque at the holiest site in islam causing deaths and injury.

Thai pilgrim killed in crane tragedy, two missing

A THAI pilgrim was confirmed to have been killed while two others remain missing after a construction crane collapsed amid stormy weather at the Grand Mosque of Mecca in Saudi Arabia on Friday, Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat said yesterday.

The tragedy, which took place days ahead of the annual haj pilgrimage, claimed 108 lives and wounded more than 230 others.

A third statement by the Office of Haj Affairs of Thailand, issued at 1am yesterday, said it and the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Jeddah had been |trying to locate three Thais |at hospitals in Mecca who |had been missing since the tragedy.

They later found the body of Thai Wanida Sadi, 48, from Bangkok at the Al-Muaisim morgue, so they will contact her relatives and the Saudi Arabian authorities to proceed on burial and the issuing of a death certificate.

Vira, citing an update from the head of the Religious Affairs Department Kritsayapong |Siri, said Thai officials and their Saudi Arabian counterparts |were looking for two missing Thais.

On Saturday, the ministry reported that two Thais were among the injured: Maeyoh Taemo, 47, a woman from Pattani; and Sama-ae Shazu, 48, a man from Yala, both of whom were later handed over to a medical team at the Royal Thai Embassy.

The Religious Affairs Department has set up two numbers - 094-9520668 and 094-9158257 - for relatives to inquire about Thai pilgrims in Mecca.
