Bus operators warned to cut fares effective as of Aug 20 or face heavy fines
All public bus operators were warned to reduce their bus fares by three satang per kilometer starting August 20 otherwise they will face a fine of up to 5,000 baht per bus ticket sold to the passengers.
The warning was made by Mr Thirapong Rodpresert, director-general of Land Transport Department, after it was reported that some bus operators have refused to cut the bus fares as earlier notified by the department.
Mrs Suchinda Cherdchai, aka Jeh Kieu, proprietor of Cherdchai Tour Company and president of the bus operators association, said Friday that she didn’t know about the fare reduction because she had not yet been officially notified.
However, Mr Nopparat Karoonyawanich, acting general manager of state-run Transport Company which oversees all operators of inter- provincial and Bangkok-provincial bus services, said that the company had notified about 2,000 bus operators nationwide about the far cut effective as of August 20.
He disclosed that about 6,000 tour buses operated by the Transport Company had already adjusted the fares down by three satang per kilometer. However, he said that the bus fares for Transport Company’s vans have not been reduced.
