Doi Tung Royal Villa is beautiful!

Doi Tung Royal Villa is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the North of Thailand. Somehow in all these years, I've missed out on seeing it until a couple of weeks ago. I drove by car from Chiang Rai to Doi Tung, a mountain near the Burmese border.

The meaning of Doi Tung is mountain (doi) tung (flags). These are traditional Lanna style flags flying at the entrance to the Villa.

I'm ashamed to admit I don't know what this little shelter with water is called. In the North, it is traditional to have this outside the front gate of a house so thirsty people passing can have a drink of water.

Some unusual flowers were along the footpath. Flowers not normally seen in Thailand are in bloom this time of year on Doi Tung.

This was the private residence of HRH Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of the current King Bhumibol.

There is a guided tour through the house. Unfortunately, they don't allow photography indoors. It is lovely. Quite Scandinavian in style with low key wood carving on ceilings and banisters.

have cycled up there a few times when i stayed in mae sai.:) good climb and views. also got lost cycling out of mae salong and ended back at doi tung, but i was hoping to end up in chiang sean :)

This complex is huge. Be prepared for a lot of walking.

The best part is they have an escalator to ride back up to the top, after walking down the mountain into the gardens.

Barrylad, the only way I would bicycle Doi Tung would be for someone to drive me to the top and let me coast down.

I was up there this past Summer, Doi Ang Kang ( the small village) was empty an beautiful drive there,.

while ur up in that neck of the woods go over to Doi Mae Salong

On this trip we spent the night in Therthai, Khun Sa's old haunts. Will put up some pics later.

Very nice misskit. Chiang Rai is really beautiful, but never heard of this villa before. Beautiful gardens there! :)

Never heard of this place and just lovely. Thanks for the time and will put on my list.

I have been there so many times I could walk it with a blindfold. Glad you could find it and enjoy it...It truly is a piece of paradise...

We were just up there last October - a bit chilled but foliage and flowers were abundant. Spectacular.
