A Wander around Phimai Historical Park

Looks beautiful, Barry. Nice photos.
My SiL saw a documentary on Phimai Historical Park and was very impressed. Since then, she has been asking me to take her there when she visits. It's far from Chiang Mai, though, so I've resisted.
Then you come right out and said you wouldn't travel to see the place. Think I'll keep on resisting.

well resisted:) like i said if you are in the area its worth a look. forgot to mention they also charge falang b 100 entrance fee..

I've been there and was quite impressed actually. Those temples would of been magnificent in there day. Still quite impressive now whats left of them.
I thought the surrounding grounds where very well kept and the size of the trees inside the compound where massive.
The actual town itself is very pleasant as well.
I enjoyed Phimai but I do like that sort of thing and the small Thai towns.

If you're on your way to Khon Kaen or points further in the NE Phimai is a nice place to stop, stretch your legs, and take in the sights, but yeah, I'd agree that in and of itself it doesn't warrant a trip all the way out there just to see it.
And it's one of the very few parks I've visited in Thailand where even with a Thai DL they still insist on charging expats the foreign tourist price. Pet peeve of mine so I won't be back.

excellent report barry, much as yourself we detoured on the way to khai yai, i figured one temple was pretty much like the other but i was pleasantly surprised by that one

Nice thread Barry and lovely pictures. Not wishing to be a smart arse kill joy I will however say that the ruins are Khmer and predate the Ayutthaya period by over a hundred years:

I went there back in 1980 when they were still renovating it and it was a really fly blown little town with one hotel. I had gone there to escape Pattaya but in my one night there the woman selling noodles outside the hotel knocked on my door at 8.00 pm and offered a cheap shag !! I politely declined ( I was reading a good book ) She digested my refusal for a few seconds then disappeared . She was back again in 5 minutes with her young assistant noodle seller who was about 15 years younger and twice as much. Unfortunately it was a very interesting book and I was well pissed anyway so it never happened

Interesting thread. Shows that the Khmers controlled this area in the 11th-13th centuries.

Been there a few times myself ,, I like getting interviewed by the Thai students :)
Allways amazes me coming from health + saftey land like I do how people are allowed to walk among all those wobbly rocks ,, in the UK that lot would have a 50 metre exclusion zone around it

bang on nig, walking through a few of those doorways was a bit precarious, the missus gave a few a miss:) an enjoyable stroll nonetheless.

Spent a weekend there, rode up from Phathumthani, good viewing, took similar snaps! Stayed at the Phimai Hotel, just around the corner from the ruins:bananaman::bananaman:. Good restaurant and a large pool.

Yep, it's well worth the trip to both and right up there with Sukothai BUT....arn't most of the picks from Phanom Rung (60+ k's from Korat/ closer to Buriram ) and pick 7 looks like Phimai - the smaller of the two (40K's from Korat)??
The BBQ chicken place in the car park at PR serves up a great lunch. There is a lesser ruin to visit to the east side about 8km's away
