Tipping?

A question for the merkins here.
It never even occurs to me in Asia, but seeing this reminded me of the odd practice of tipping all and sundry.
Now this seems a bit cheecky, making up some amount to tip yourself and in this case over 50%, but the point is, it seems the tip is included in the bill.
What would happen if you just flat out refused to pay the tip.
Handed the guy 10 bucks and said keep the change.
Would they/could they call the cops?
Is tipping MANDATORY now?

Canada is shit like this too, shit Service by fat bitches that demand tips or they carry on like crazied bush pigs and won't serve you again.

Personally, unless I had agreed the tip, I would hand the slip back and ask for another one for $ 9.54.

I was chatting to New York barman not to long ago and discussed the tipping culture in the States.

He told me the service Industry pay a basic retainer and the staff live on there tips. He told me in his bar its a minimum 15% , if the tip is not forthcoming he will ask the customer if there is a problem with his service.

If they don't pay the tip the staff will totally ignore the punter.

What a totally shit system to work under EH. This is what happens when workers are not protected by a Union, one becomes a slave to the business owner and can be dismissed in a heart beat.

Always someone else waiting to work for nothing.

The word math and the signature are the same pen. So even if the word math was not written by the customer there would seem to be little room for recourse. If paying by credit card , double check the bill and use your own pen.

If the service was sh1t I am checky enough, or maybe with age that should read curmudgeonly enough, to write "nothing".:rolleyes:

Looks like the tip has been added afterwards, thus the customer can refuse the bill

You may well do but you would not last long in America. The tip is all about giving the staff a living wage and until one takes that onboard traveling in America will piss you off.

I hate having to tip, rather have it built into the bill, so much easier.

Is this your receipt?

CC receipts all come printed with a tip line and a total which the customer usually fills out.

One never knows where the next dollar is coming from and one must reply on tips to make it.

The business owners must be killing it considering they do not have to pay staff real wages.

So glad I'm an Aussie. Service staff get payed well but in saying that its friggin expensive to go out.

It beats me too, down under we do not have a tipping mentality and caused me some strife, on my first visit to the US. Imagine the shock i got at the response on my first cab trip in New York, "tip or I throw the bags in the river" I had never met such rude people in my life before.
I thought all Americans were like that, luckily my next visit was to Portland, Oregon, much nicer .

The staff and drivers don't fuk around when it comes to there tips because that's there wages. :confused:

Suppose we would be the same EH.

Hard for Aussies to handle simply because most are ignorant of the real situation over there.

Here in the states it absolutely appalls me that people ALWAYS tip 15% to 20% without even considering how the service really was. We were at a very nice place the other night and the service sucked and yet the guy picking up the bill tipped them about 18%. I mean we had to ask for water, the food did not come at the same time, the food was poor.

I tip 100% based on how they did their job. If they do a good job then I will pay the 15%. If it is sub par and I have to ask for basic stuff then they might get half. If I have to constantly ask they get ZERO simple as that. It is amazing how these lazy waiters/waitresses just EXPECT the tip. I also get tired of hearing people when they know I did not tip, snip at me that "they only survive on tips". My response is "Then they should work to earn it"

This brings up a good point. Maybe if the gratuity is expected then the service should be expected as well. So maybe when the waiter/waitress comes over the first thing should be to state that if the level of service is good so will the tip, if it isn't then... It will then be up to the server to decide!

Like a soapy? If the experience is "double" then the level of tip is worth it.

I know staff in the US (and Thailand) rely upon tips to make a living wage, and I tip accordingly, in cash so the waiter and not the owner receive the money.

Coming from the UK the law there is that if the money is included in the bill then it belongs to the owner and any gratuity is at his discretion and not the customer's.

In the 80s and 90s, Maxwell's in Hampstead had waitresses paying management at the start of the shift, according to the hours they were scheduled to work.

And tipping was optional.

The dancers at Stringellows also paid management for the job. Made their money out of customers, any way they could.

Not sure about the States but if I receive a bill and there is additional service and vat charges I rarely add a tip unless the service was superb.

Last time I was in the States (Denver Colorado) the service in all the restaurants was absolutely great unlike the service I received last time I was in Europe.

Here in Thailand I always leave a tip either in a bar or a Restaurant. That little token payment often gets you continued good service and if you frequent the same places.

Lost me there, Mr. Dawg. Bill is slightly less than $10. Tip is $5. That means the tip is roughly 35% of the total bill. Hold on..........I got it....you're saying the tip is 50% of the bill, not the total. My bad,,,you are correct. Even more outrageous. Thus, at a norm of 15%, the tip should have been around $1.50.

The concept of a tip as a 'right' irritates me. If the service - in the US - is good, I tip; if it's not, I don't. Tipping here in the Phils is kind of like in LOS - I actually tip most of the time here, as long as no service charge has been added to the bill, and the person being tipped convinces me that the tip will actually go to them.
