Vendors refuse to leave night bazaar

(Agencies) - Shopowners at Bangkok's Suan Lum Night Bazaar plan to defy a Monday deadline to pack up and leave while a court decides the fate of one of the city's most popular tourist destinations.

"We will stay. We will not leave," a giftshop owner Wanwisakha Chansorn told Reuters outside her tiny stall in the sprawling market of 3,000 shops, a handful of restaurants and a Thai puppet theatre.

"Nobody plans to leave and we will go along with the majority," she said of her fellow vendors who sell everything from flip flops, fake watches and other tourist trinkets to handmade furniture and silk art.

Shopkeepers like Wanwisakha can generate sales of 10,000-20,000 baht per day while paying a monthly rent of 5,000-8,000 baht.

"Most of our customers are foreigners. Nobody wants to leave at a time when they are making money," she said of a major stop on Bangkok's tourist map with busloads of foreign visitors, mostly Asian, visiting the night market each day.

The stuff on sale at suanlum is more expensive than in any department store or supermarket.

The Pratunam Center is virtually empty. They could relocate all the vendors there.

Seeing as all the vendors were told it was short term lease of three years which would probably *not* be extended when they signed up, they've got nothing to whine about really.

Agree, have spent some nice time there sipping some beers with friends on my stays in BKK. The food was decent too.

Suan Lum will be missed by me, beer garden was always a good place to take friends from O/S....and what's it's replacement again...some multi-storey complex that'll be half empty come opening day and all but abandoned in 10 years.

You serious? It's just a massive collection of market stalls, slightly less cockroach infested than Chatuchak, and with a huge open area which has lots of seating, beer stalls, food stalls, and a stage for those Thai performers who are too crap to appear anywhere decent.

Things I will miss:

The beer
The beer girls
The sometimes cheap stuff at the stalls (but I don't go there to shop)
Meeting up with mates there and drinking beer
The dancing girls on the stage in their splendid mimimalist outfits

Things I won't miss:

The ridiculously overamplified music
The ridiculously over-dressed stage performers
The appalling quality of some of the singers
The wholly inadequate drainage when it rains

The interesting part is a big place where you can seat open air, drink beers and eat with friends at night. There is some thai live "pop music" , talok and dancers on the stage.

The market stalls can be ignored, just tourist crap.
