I have to lay up some small bricks like you get here in Thailand. Question is, is it better to use a "ready mix rendering mix, ready to go" or to make my own mix using sand and cement? What is the difference between "rendering cement" and "motor mix for laying up bricks"? What would you use? tia John
how much are you going to lay as the readymix is quite expensive?

There are 2 basic types of cement in Thailand,One is fast drying and idea for concrete,beams ect (ie.....Chaang Deang (Red Elephant), Nok Insee Phet (Diamond Bird) ...),the other dries slower which is good for brick work, render, floor tiles, etc.(ie...Sua Faa (blue tiger), Sua Kiaow (Green Tiger)..)
I used Chaang Deang for all load bearing parts when building, and Sua Kiaow for everything else but note that Sua Faa (Blue tiger) is a special cement to use for rendering and it contains a plasticizer, so there is no need to add any.
I would use a mix of one to one and sieve the sand through some of that blue mesh first so the big grains of sand and any other small debris is removed.
I have never used the pre-mixed stuff so will leave that for others to comment on .:)

The small bricks are layed differently here. In my country, the morter is mixed real soft. Here, using the small bricks, it is mixed stiff. I'm not sure why.
Having said that, I would think mixing your own would be better because you can adhust the firmness. But, if you've only got around 200 or so to lay, ready mixed would probably be better and you won't have a pile of sand left over in your yard that you don't know what to do with. IMHO.
