Phuket Municipality Wins Asean Environmentally Sustainable Cities Awards
PHUKET, Dec 3 (Bernama) - Thailand's Phuket Municipality has won the prestigious Asean Environmentally Sustainable Cities Awards or the ASEAN ESC Awards 2011, together with other nine cities/municipalities in the 10-nation bloc, Thai News Agency reports Saturday.
Phuket Municipality Mayor Somjai Suwansuppana said that a ceremony to present the regional awards was held on Indonesia's Bali Island on November 23, at which she was conferred the honourable awards on behalf of local people and the Phuket Municipality in the category of "Clean Air".
The Asean ESC Awards has been yearly organised by the Asean Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC) to encourage member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to develop their environmental management in a sustainable aspect in the categories of "Clean Air", "Clean Water", and "Clean and Green Land."
According to the mayor, air quality in the Phuket Municipality has regularly been monitored by a municipal air control centre, covering a follow-up of oxygen and carbon dioxide emissions and measurements of the amount of dust particles on local roads and streets, with data sent to the Thai Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's Pollution Control Department having been certified to meet international standards.
The mayor told reporters on Friday, that apart from her Phuket Municipality, the Pitsanulok Municipality in the Lower Thai North has also won a top prize of the ASEAN ESC Awards 2011 in the category of "Clean and Green Land for Small Cities."
