Patong info for newbie tourist required

    Hi Everyone,

First time I believe that I have ever ventured this far south on the Teak Door page!

I have a good friend and his wife who have suddenly found themselves visiting Phuket next Feb.

They are spending 6 nights at Absolute Bangla Suites.

The Husband has been to Hong Kong. The Wife has never left Australia. Both in their fifties.

Both not big drinkers and definitely not interested in any nightlife what so ever.

Both horrified when they asked me about the place they had chosen and I told them the truth.

Please, any locals who can help me to help them have a great holiday.

What is local that is not part of the red light area? What tours do you recommend. Is there a local market within walking distance that they could enjoy? Any information is appreciated.

    CHeers

    MM

Memok, change their bookings. If they're your mates, move them elsewhere.

The family and I still love Phuket. But hate Patong. We have avoided it for 20 years now other than a drive through to get up to the northern beaches. From the airport to where we stay Kata no Patong but go through Chalong.

Its hopefully time for them to get some sort of refund. How the heck did they pick that place MM?

As Dill mentioned the southern part of the island is nice, touristy but not too much. Kata, Kata Noi, Nai Harn, Chalong, Rawaii are all nice as well as is the east side.

Even with a rental car you still have to come back to your hotel at night... Best of luck to them.

As others have posted, I would cancel the hotel, even if you lose the money and book yourself in down Kata way.

With Kata, you can hire a motor from the airport and drive yourself, thus giving you the freedom to visit wherever, whenever without dealing with the rip-off taxi merchants.

Another good thing about hiring from the airport is that if you have a later flight, you can drive to Nai Yang beach next to the airport and grab some food or beverages and drop the motor off when ready to fly.

If its not until February I doubt he'll lose his money. If he's booked on Agoda or Booking.com even though it says you cant cancel for free......because it is so far off they will get in touch with the hotel and get them to waive it.

Booking.com did it for me recently.

If the worse comes to the worse I'm sure someone like Luigi, Looper or Jack Meoff(if penthouse has been booked)would be willing to suffer it out and take one for the team

I look for the insider deals

They're a bunch of tossers really, they own Agoda too so have you by the balls.

I was looking at places in the Maldives for a while on the Booking.com app, then all of a sudden every hotel i looked at even four stars all started off at around 6000 baht a night, so I went to Hotels.com.

I think theyve sussed that out now with their spyware app and have started undercutting Hotels.com again

Will think about it overnight, and make some recommendations tomorrow. However, MM, what is their preference for spending their time during the day and night?

Phuket went to shit years ago.

If they want a peaceful holiday, tell them to go to Hua Hin or similar.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I sort of half thought that might be the reaction but also half hoping I might be able to help them salvage their holiday. He actually called me last week and I only got back to him yesterday. I have a funny feeling he may have given up waiting for me and so just went and booked anyway.

I will do what I can to convince he to try somewhere else but I get the feeling it is some kind of flight package deal so might not be that easy.

PAG - would appreciate any more info you may have. They love talking! Getting to know people - especially locals. They would love to wander around a local market trying different food and attempting a chin wag with the sellers. Relax on a quiet beach for a day. They both love massages. Not scared to hire a car if need be.

I would suggest the Cape Panwa area. There's a representative selection here: https://www.booking.com/searchresult...aAuUnEALw_wcB&

Fairly small area, with a small resident expat population frequenting such venues at "The Beach Bar" at Kao Khad (https://www.phuket101.net/the-beach-bar/) and the Ship Inn at Ao Yon (Welcome to the Ship Inn Bar & Restaurant). Easy access to some of the nearby islands (Coral Island etc), and quite a good baht type bus service into Phuket Town for some shopping and sight seeing. Couple of good, non touristy type markets in the area, including a nightly set up near the Aquarium.

Yeah Patong's not the best spot for a 'get away from it all' type break.

If I go with the family usually we stay somewhere like Kamala.

Rugby trips and it's Patong ---> Stadium ---> Patong ---> Curse life ---> Stadium...

Looking at their website, that hotel is part of a chain of two hotels, the other being 4km away and called Absolute Twin Sands which is nicely away from the bustling Bangla Road.

I'd suggest hiring a car, i can give you a guys Line id if you want. Aging One put me onto him years ago and they will bring the car to the airport and hold up a sign with your name on.

What they save in taxis to and from the airport make it well worthwile, plus they can get around all the quiet beaches, beautiful viewpoints, fishing villages, rum distillery and especially Phan Nga and James Bond island for day trips.Ao Nang and Krabi are not too far away either.

Considering the ownership of Absolute Bangla Suites it will be a flybuy deal for their fractional ownership programme. Just so that they are aware. The place is in itself pleasant enough with a restaurant and pool on the top floor. It can be noisy so they should make sure they get a room facing the rear of the building. Bangla Rd is pedestrians only after 6pm so that needs to be thought about when returning from dinner out.
