Bike sharing company pulls out of Phuket (and the rest of Thailand)

Did anyone really expect the chimps to understand this or let it compete with their fucking rip off tuk tuks?

The Ofo Thai Company has issued an announcement to the Phuket City Development (PKCD) company that they’ve cancelled the Ofo bike project on the island.

The announcement says that “the Ofo bike head office in China has canceled the Ofo bicycle project in Thailand. The cancellation is effective from August 28, 2018.”

“The Ofo Thai Company will stop this bike service in every area in Thailand. The bikes will be collected from August 31, 2018.”

“Ofo Thai Company would like to thank you the Phuket City Development (PKCD) for helping promote the project and their co-operation with other activities.”

“”We are very sorry and apologise for an inconvenience.”

The Off Bike project started with great fanfare just over a year ago and was quickly proving to be unmanageable with
people stealing their bikes or dumping them in canals or in bushland.
The bike-sharing company has grown quickly over recent years but has had patchy success in Asia where either poor publicity or bad local management hasn’t been able to communicate the way bike-sharing is meant to work.

It's a shame as it works well in countries across the globe.

Same old problem communication, communication, communication.
I should imagine they would have ended up knicked or scrapped..

The system works well in Singapore with several different companies on offer. Would never work in Thailand because of mak ngai.

No it doesn't. Apparently Singapore is littered with ride share bikes that get dumped everywhere.

Maybe the Thai system was different but...

Pretty sure they are fining lots of people in Singapore and sorting it out that way.

They are also making it cheaper for people who respect the rules and barring those who don't.

About half the companies initially involved have failed.

All in all, it looks like it needs the kind of diligent oversight that is...umm...quite rare in Thailand.

OK, I thought that was part of the beauty of the system in SIN, that you could leave it anywhere because the app on your phone shows you your nearest bike. Where it falls over is places like the train station and there being such high demand in peak hours that people have taken to putting their own lock on them, which is not the spirit of the system.

Wasn't there a uni trialling their own bike share system in Thailand? If I recall, those bikes could be left anywhere (on campus) and the app showed you where they are.

You're too kind. Some would say non-existant.

Tamasaat had something going, I think.

Haven't read anything on how that's progressing.

Kaset and RSU have them. Both campuses seem to like them and not much problem other than silly students trying to bring them in the class room..

Why does the op single out Phuket when it's the whole of Thailand?
I'm sure hese bikes only have the one gear as well. Great if you're in Holland or Majorca.
What kind of fuckin retard(apart from Somtamslap) would want to cycle up and down the huge hills of what are probably the most dangerous roads in Thailand-Phuket?

Yeah you'd certainly have earned your beer if you cycled from, say, Patong to Kata.

Maybe the idea was more to cycle around Phuket town and environs, which I guess is where the bikes are pictured.

    That's pretty flat, no?

There's a way of life on Phuket that has feck all to do with Patong etc.

    No it isn't you moron.

It's like a cheap bike ride compared to a Bt300 tuk tuk fare FFS.

If there were the equivalent of ferries - Buses - the tuk tuks would be out of business, which will never happen with the mafia in charge.

Hence no doubt instructions were issued to fuck these bikes up.

Er.. that would be because the OP is about a Chinese company writing to the PKCD. Can't you read Dilly?

So in other words you know nothing about them, where they are located or what tourists were using them for.

It's good that you are able to enlighten us on that basis.

I might be more perplexed as to Harry's grave and anxious concern regarding items have nothing whatsoever to do with him or his world.

Seems to be riding a critical band-wagon that he has no relationship with or knowledge of.

    Just wondering out loud.

Rather than your usual pattern of barely making sense, that's actually complete nonsense.

They've just pulled the scheme out of Manchester also.
Apparently 25% of the bikes have been slung in the canals for no alterior motive other than mindless acts of pissed up lunacy.

Everything Jeff posts is complete fucking nonsense.

That's what happens when you're sat in a basement in Portland trying to pretend you know what's going on in Asia.

    Fucking idiot.

I notice that Ofo's big failing is that it's a dockless system, so there is no way of knowing who lobbed the thing in the canal or whatever.

Mobike, which I think is still in Bkk and Chiang Mai, have a dock system, and an app. So you unlock the bike and therefore you presumably are responsible for it until you lock it back up.

I haven't tried it yet, a mate of mine wants to do a bike tour over New Year, but I'm not sure it's got a beer holder.
