    A few observations.

Rawai covers a very large area and for those who seek them, has a very large number of bars with 'services' in every corner. It wouldn't surprise me if Rawai didn't have as many BG's in total as Patong. Peter needs to have a drive along Sai Yuan in the evening, past Banana Corner for example. That said, the pier road from Chalong Circle to the Pier has probably 10 or 12 bars that seem to have a surplus of waitresses in relation to their customers.

Yesterday, I drove from Chalong (just north of Rawai) to Takua Pa in Phang Nga (we'd been told that the electric would be off for the whole day so needed an excursion to get away from it). To get to Takua Pa, you go through Khao Lak (it's about 30km north). Took me 2 hours to get to Khao Lak, though I knew exactly the distance as I've cycled there quite a few times (200km round trip). Just a point about the electric, yesterday was a planned outage, and our supply has been great for the 10 years I've been in my house. Khao Lak again is very much a nice place to visit venue, but unless you were running a business, not a place to retire/live.

2 years ago I took a couple of friends to Ko Lanta for a few days. I'd never been, and to be honest I wouldn't be itching to get back there again. Nothing wrong with it from a holiday perspective, good beaches, etc, and Lanta Town was worth a visit. The restaurants like most of these 'stretched' seaside areas, tend to be in clumps around resorts, and the few we tried were on a par with tourist areas in Phuket (Kata, Karon, Surin etc etc), i.e. pretty rubbish compared to the non tourist places on Phuket.

I'm not denigrating Peter's points, but sometimes there needs to be a different perspective offered.

Peter, straight up, I'm not a fan of Phuket, but I have an open mind.

I've never been to that National park in Phang Gna province ... ever thought of a longer visit and photo thread?

its the Knao Sok national park covers a huge area and includes a very large dam, if you want a photo thread you will have to do it yourself

not a bar or bargirl person mate, my observations are in the daytime, you have certainly seen a lot more bars than i have in my 7 years living in Rawai
Gave up driving in the evening about 6 years ago when i very nearly run into a motorcycle and side car stopped in the middle of the road with no lights on
To many drunks, vehicles with no lights on and traveling on the wrong side of the road after 7PM

Anyway we are of to Krabi for the day have not been there for awhile

Khao Lak if you have not visited it, is a tourist town where the local authorities including the BIB and business owners do not want any professional working ladies setting up shop there, they are very promptly told to more on by the BIB if they try to
The locals are very friendly including the expats, the only single males i have met there work in the diving industry and only usually stay for the high season
A good place to have a holiday for couples and families, its more like Phuket was 20 years ago, whore-mongers are not welcome there and never stay there anyway because there is no cheap company for them to share their time with and tell them how hansom they are

For those who may be interested, the road from Phuket to Krabi is dual carriage way all the way so there is no holdup by slow moving vehicles and it makes it a nice weekend drive
Krabi town is much the same as before, but the beach tourist area has more tourists than previously and also more shops, restaurants, resorts
Still very small compared to Phuket with less to do for tourists except island visiting which can be done from Phuket as easily

Khao Lak. The best beaches in Thailand but as you say, lacks amenities/facilities in Phuket.
Still have regular breakdowns in the electricity supply in Rawai Phuket, caused. manly by the work going on at Chalong circle i think, still not as bad. as previous years when we had blackouts sometimes every week, mainly caused by vehicles hitting the electricity poles that were to close to the road, they are slowly moving the poles future away from the road or burying the wires now

The fantasy live show is worth seeing for both children and adults, if you go pay for the show only forget about the meal eat elsewhere
If in Phuket on the weekend go to the Phuket town weekend market all the local transport operators know the location, best selection and prices on they majority of items tourists like to buy
Should be a tour desk where you are stopping with a selection of other things to do

The tour businesses sell tickets to all the shows and other attractions not just tours, tell them you will be comparing prices from different tour desks and you will get better prices offered to you for just about everything they have on offer

The Boathouse in Kata used to be my Goto place in Phuket- stayed there several times. Unfortunately, last time I was in Phuket (staying at Cape Panwa) I drove there for old times sake, and a nice lunch at the Boathouse (probably Phuket's best restaurant imo). What a nightmare- traffic jams, parking impossible, the beach jampacked with pink whale blubber. Worse than Patong actually. Needless to say, we did not stop for lunch. Maybe I hit it at the wrong time, but I certainly couldn't recommend it in high season.

For beachgoers, Nai Harn is very nice and relatively uncrowded.

Agreed, we were there a couple of weeks ago for lunch. Luckily we got one of the hotel parking spaces, otherwise it would have been horrendous. The beach itself was busy, but not packed. Seemed to be a large proportion of Russians judging by their haircuts. Southern Phuket traffic is a nightmare at the moment because of the underpass being built at Chalong Circle, hence we rarely venture in that direction anymore.

We'd not been to the Boathouse for quite a while, and were disappointed that the lunch menu was quite restricted with few 'quality' dishes on offer compared to the dinner menu. However, we didn't go hungry, and what we had was very good.

    The beach:

    Everything's better with a Singha:

Had a very good Crab Cake as a starter:

M'Sahib had some sort of Pomelo salad:

My main was a Massaman Lamb Shank which I enjoyed:

M'Sahib doesn't eat meat, and there was a distinct lack of seafood on the menu, so made do with a Prawn Pad Thai:

Had a couple of glasses of a decent red:

Shared a couple of good desserts between us:

expensive for a 2 bedroom unfurnished house, last house i rented it was awhile ago but rents have not gone up was a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom furnished house in Chalong for 12,000 baht a month, there are houses and apartments to rent just about anywhere on the Island and it pays to ask around locally if you like a area and deal directly with the owners

    --UPDATE--

Not gonna put up pics, just some observations that may help those holidaying in Phuket with 4 pax up.

    (1) Hire a motor.

Got a motor from the airport for 1K a day. it works out cheaper than paying for taxis to and from airport + sightseeing + dicking about.

    (2) It's not as expensive as people make out.

Digs at Beach Heights in Kata set me back a bit over 2K a night with brekkie. Beers and spirits not too bad around Kata and dinner for 4 with a couple of drinks and little'un set us back around 2k up per night (lunch around half that).

    (3) Things to do...

    Viewpoint (free)
    Beach (free)
Full-day 3 island trip to Maya/Phi Phi/ Monkey Island with pick up/lunch etc...(1600 baht each)
Chalong Bay Rum Tour (450 Baht for half hour tour, free Mojito and tasting session)

    (4) Kill time before flight.

Had a 5:30pm evening flight so checked out at 12 and headed to Nai Yang Beach. Its an hour or so drive from Kata, so got here just after 1pm(ish) and had some lunch literally on the beach at a place called Ma Ma Nang.
After a feed and a couple of beers, it's a short (6km) drive to the airport.

    For Dilly

Unfortunately, Eatigo has no presence in Phuket at the time of writing.

Chalong Bay rum is only good for cleaning paint-brushes. Don't waste your time, or money.

Can you recommend any Thai rums and where they might be purchased?

    I'm thinking of this type.

Sang Som. Can be bought anywhere, though, it's not that good. Maybe someone else is more knowledgeable.
A great, local SE Asia rum would be Tanduay from the Philippines. Sang Som can't touch it.
Best buy a bottle of duty free Caribbean rum on your way into the country.
