Post coup - any daily life changes?

Got some relatives (in their prime) who booked a holiday in Phuket who have to decide whether to stay on at their stop over in Singapore from Aus or continue to Phuket.

Is the 10pm curfew enforced? Any tensions over and above the ususal in Phuket?

I've been living full time out here from 1997 and have seen no real change apart from closed schools and the curfew where I live in Chonburi.

Can anybody confirm the same in Phuket?

Public transport and taxis vanish off the streets before the curfew.

Phuket has formally asked for the curfew to be changed to midnight. Nothing going on at all. In fact I have heard the military is on Koh Chang and enforcing it there as well.

Just means they've gotta start drinking earlier and change their sleeping patterns.It will still be a lot less boring than Singapore IMO and a hell of a lot cheaper. Plus they will have all those sun rises to look forward to.

I was in Phuket for the weekend.

Bars shut around 10:30, but you could get a lock in a bit later if you wanted. Did one night and walked back to my hotel at about 11:30.

Loads of people walking around, not a policeman or a soldier in sight.

Sat in the hotel bar drinking until we could drink no more. Some people reported certain bars owned by the right people served until 6am....

Dillinger: You make a good point and time difference from Aus might even see them not having to adjust that much.

The beach in Patong sure has changed, for the better me thinks. All those thousands plastic lounge chairs are gone, completely changed the complexion of the beach. There's still a fair bit of trash, they need a regular crew to sweep it everyday, and take anyone who leaves their Mc Donald's wrappers up into the jungle and tie them to a tree for a day.

Can't speak for the jungle but the, now displaced, local vendors would have picked up the rubbish if their were business savvy?

One thing I have noticed in Pattaya is that since the coup, there have been ZERO police road blocks on Sukhumvit where they used to a couple of times a month shut the whole road down to fleece passers by.

I had the unfortunate experience to be on Sukumvit Soi 11 yesterday.

I was staggered, the Po Po have enforced the removal of the side walk vendors and punters can actually use the side walk for what it was intended.

Vendors set up at 7.00PM and must close down at midnight.

On Mondays no one is allowed to set up at all.

Actually I am now 100% against the junta now. Sure, I like the way that they are cleaning up the cops. I think their work on tourist areas is positive as well. They full scale assault on the rotten toxin family and cult is a good thing. However, whilst watching a movie yesterday on the tele with the missus, they stopped it half way through just at an exciting part and put some fat blind bloke on talking about taxis (in place of the usual disruption of the new PM. Unforgivable.

Don't know if the Junta fellas are extraordinarily sensitive or if they don't realize that the masses don't pick up on the subtle connections or casual innuendo, as most Thai don't have any real understanding of their contemporary history anyway.....and in their DNA not to attain critical thought, question, or challenge.

Why bother censoring items that they don't understand or don't connect-the-dots in relation to.

The first principle of military dictatorship is to know and understand your lorded over population/culture.

Its not censoring - it was for the daily 6pm announcement from the Junta that takes over the tele (on the cheap channels). Only this time no PM, only some blind gay boy banging on about something.

A few changes with my life, actually. Having spent a fair bit of dosh doing our noice Villa down south up, the coup has left the upmarket real estate sector in tatters- very difficult to rent, nigh impossible to sell. Looks like it might be the case for some time, too. Thus, I've had to tighten my belt considerably- no rental income, just outgoings. wife is currently down in Pattay with MIL at the place (in a vain hope of renting or sale), I'm living alone like a penniless bachelor up here. I'm getting real sick of tinned fish and instant noodles. But at least I'm happy, like the junta says.
