    "shopped pix"

I realize the purist photographers don’t tend to appreciate photoshopping or other editing techniques except in the case of repair / commercial needs or keeping a customer happy.

But I believe there’s a place for it and quite enjoy messing around on PS, Illustrator, Gimp, Pixlr and some of the other photo editing software out there. I am NO expert. I just like the tinkering aspect of it all and have managed to sell some prints and get a little side work through referrals, some orders, etc.

This is a surgeon fish I shot in the Red Sea with my friend’s Galaxy. I felt that the software allowed me to embellish on the shadow behind him enough to portray it as a similar fish rising out of the silt on the bottom.

    Gimp/Pixlr/Photobucket

This is a shot of a tree branch (I think it’s a Catalpa tree), I was positioned about 6 feet under it, pointing directly up with just mid-day sky as background. Canon EOS

    Gimp/PS

I actually sold a watered down version of this one to an advertising agency in Dubai. I don’t think they’ve used it so far and I retained my rights to other versions of it. Small digital camera (can’t remember exactly)

    Gimp

Shot this guy a few clicks behind the compound here in Saudi. He was perched ever so nicely in the evening. Canon EOS

    PS

For this last one, I wanted to enhance the face-like image that’s found in the center of the frame. (It’s from salt spillage at the bottom of a crater.) I also wanted to experiment with color and take an already Mars-like place and make it seem even more otherworldly. Canon EOS

    Photobucket tools

Please share some shots if you like editing software, alternative backgrounds, etc.

I have enjoyed playing around with some photo-drawing conversion software and found it quite enjoyable.

This is one that I converted from a staged back yard during a visit to Kukenhof gardens a few years ago. No fancy software really, just paper artist, a free app on the tablet...

Hick, why don't you describe the process you used in PS.

Just applying a filter is a pretty uninteresting use of PS.

The process I used? For which pic?

    This pretty much answers that:

Speaking for my cache (most of which haven't yet been posted):

With no fixed plan or order and in a quite non-professional manner, I applied multiple filters, changed colors, tints, light, etc. Experimented with distortions, enhancements, etc. Converted from one program to another. Printed, took a photo in distinct lighting with or without a mirror and re-scanned, etc. etc.

So. Do you have any "shopped pix" to share, or no?

I used PS in conjunction with 3d rendering programs at work. I don't do it as a hobby.

    haha - relax

That is what happens with Photoshop etc
buttons get pushed , sliders moved, knobs twiddled etc
and stopping when you think the resulting colours shapes etc are pleasing.
What exactly did you expect to see here?

And how is it different to you setting the parameters at work, hitting Render and going of for lunch whilst it does the work for you ?

''Just applying a filter is a pretty uninteresting use of PS. ''

That's basically what it is for - editing photos
So what's a more interesting use for it ?
if you are into the brushes etc, might as well use a less clunky dedicated art program.

Apparently pressing buttons under the guise and with the eye of a trained professional.

PS: I wish he'd make a thread on it. It'd be interesting and certainly educational to us hobbyists.

sorry, I see no evidence of the use on any of PS's more powerful and difficult tools on what you posted. I see no complex procedures used that show any proficiency. What you posted was simply a one step trick. It is not just used for editing. It is used for creating illustrations from digital imagery.
    Hick's work shows more proficiency.
Can't believe how thin skinned you guys are about commentary. In any creative profession there is an atmosphere of constant criticism and revision. Easily offended people don't last long.

It could be because this isn't a creative profession. It's a thread on Teakdoor.

At any rate, you can obviously post any type of comment that you want, but in the spirit of TD: why don't you show us something instead of just telling us?

Well, like I told you I don't do it as a hobby. I can use PS but my staff was much more proficient at it. It was a job several layers below my grade level.

Please don't take offense. I'm happy to see you are enjoying yourself.

Thanks for that contribution Humbert. It seems good effects can be had without having to resort to difficult procedures or writing specialised scripts.

I use gimp rather than PS, simply because it is free and I am not a pro making money from my photos. I just do it for fun. I might print and frame a few of them one day.

Well, thanks. It's all good. I have (of course) seen plenty of professional stuff online and....it's..ya know, pretty beyond me. Well...I'm a hobbyist for a reason.

Yeh, Troy. I haven't updated my PS in at least two years, I think. I sway towards GIMP more often anymore as well.

I 've got a few "beat" laptops laying around. I think one of them has a nice setup of Adobe Illustrator beside PS. Used to have a lot of fun with those two working in conjunction.

A few slight differences between gimp and ps that I can't recall now, but it's a nice, free program.

I love learning the art / design software, the same as some people like doing crossword puzzles - no real point or purpose to it.
I can't help myself, i just steal them.
i have a massive collection, most unopened.
My favourites and the ones I'm actually good at are Illustrator and Sketchup.

Sketchup does a great free version though, you could plan and model a house there or even layout a whole off grid estate.

    Well here you go professor
Some Adobe illustrator Pen Tool practice , tracing a heavily stair stepped pixelated photo which I choose it because it ' incorporates' one of those tricky infinity loops.
