    Dedicated UW Cameras

I'll be going to Thailand for the first time soon. Planning to scuba while there.

Last time I took UW pics I was using an old Nikonos V film camera. Yeah, its been a while since I was in the water.

I'm going digital with my UW and debating which way to jump. I'm wanting a housing and strobe, etc, for my T2i, but it is priced a bit high for my budget.

Because of that, I'm debating the merits of a dedicated UW point & shoot camera like the SeaLife DC1400 MAXX Duo (I'm not sold on the SeaLife, just using it as example). I can get the whole kit, camera, housing, 2 strobes for about what the housing alone runs for my DSLR.

First, there is a trade-off and I know it. I love RAW and feel UW shots need it more that most. I'm having problems finding dedicated UW point & shoot cameras that support RAW and would like to know if anyone has any suggestions.

Second, are there any Photo Bugs out there that have used one of the dedicated UW cameras like the SeaLife? What were your opinions?

    (scuba depths, not snorkel please)

Don't wate your time. Stick with a DSLR. Buy the housing first, pics at 5-10 metres will still be great. Wait till you can then affords the strobing and buy it later.

Imo buying a point and shoot is wasting money.

I agree, its just hard to justify double the expense for 2 dives every third or fourth year.

Regardless of which way I go, I do plan on 'not' waiting on the strobe.

I wonder if it's possible to hire or borrow said gear then?

If you like taking good pics I doubt you'd be happy with a point and shoot which is really only for memories, not great pics.

But if all you want is memories then a decent point and shoot will be more than enough.

For occasional use just go for a cheap digital brand camera and housing. You can pick up a Intova and housing for around the 8 - 9 grand mark and they take pretty good pictures and HD movies. Housing is rated to 50 metres but have taken mine down to just over 80 and it didn't leak.
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

Most dive boat and dive shops have cameras for rent. About 1,000 baht per day.

    A likely story?
