    Fun you tube camera reviews

I'm looking at buying a new camera (Olympus OM-D EM-5) and while looking at reviews found these guys on you tube.

Pretty funny stuff and light hearted, I found myself strangely drawn into watching loads of them just to see what they do. A good combo of the English raised host (complete with accent), the dorky camera guy and assistant Alamby (who sounds Aussie) who, for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, want to marry. All shot on the streets of Hong Kong.

Trouble is, after watching a few you can't go back to watching the normal boring reviews. I reckon they have done a great job and thought it worth sharing.

Warning. At 2:00 you get to see Alamby eating an ice cream.

Like it says on the YouTube review "Can any of those two options compare to footage of Alamby eating ice cream?"
    Nope

Here's the review of the OM-D EM-5. It should be released here in the USA this week. A much anticipated camera.

Strangely, I have an overwhelming desire to buy a waterproof compact camera now...

I wasn't thinking about them at all, just the bit of fanny in the video.

I've got the orange panasonic in that video. It's great, rugged and waterproof. Good to take to the beach or the pool, you can get some interesting underwater shots up to 3m I think.

I am also considering the Fuji X100, a beautiful rangefinder in the style of Leica.

Kai is pretty excited about it..

Trouble is it has been beset by quirks and handling problems when it was released but these seem to be now being addressed by firmware updates. It has a fixed 35mm (eqiv) lens and full size sensor which produces amazing image quality. The fixed lens is a bummer but at the same time makes you get involved in your photograhy more instead of standing back with a telephoto. Price is around $1000. There is a higher end model, the X pro 1 which has 3 interchangable lenses (at present) but is $1600 body only. Lenses are about $400 each. There is also the X10 at around $600 which has a small zoom lens. I am also cosidering that one but I think I want to go higher end than that.

Maybe these are too much for my type of photography which isn't much but I have the urge to get back into it with a level of involvement I am missing in my point and shoot. I've had cameras since i was 17.

These both give you a nice old school level of manual control, rangefinder style, solid build, very high image quality (professional), compact and discreet size and great retro looks. Obviously at the price I am looking for a camera to last me indefinately. The x100 is certainly a nice camera to hit the streets with. I am just not sure I will miss not being able to change lenses.

The Olympus OM-D EM-5 also has the retro looks (the OM was a legendary 35mm SLR film camera), is $1300 with a kit lens of 12-50mm (about 28-100 in a 35mm eqivilant), has a range of high end lenses to chose from, is very compact in size, dust and splash proof, can be adapted to take any of the micro 4/3rds and even the OM lenses and seems more of a complete system.

Sensor is too small for high image quality. The micro 4/3rds sensor system camears are much better and offer interchangeable lenses. The best Panny at the moment is this:

LUMIX Digital Cameras - LUMIX G Compact System Cameras - DMC-GX1 - Overview - Panasonic UK & Ireland

    Or this:

LUMIX Digital Cameras - LUMIX G Compact System Cameras - DMC-G3 - Overview - Panasonic UK & Ireland

But this one is due for replacement soon. It has been one of the top 4/3 camera for a while now.

Have you got your new camera yet Bung?

I just got mine today, a Nikon P510.

I have had Olympus SLR cameras before too (OM2) still have it but I don't know if it's worthwhile to buy film these days. I'd sell it if I could get a decent price for it and the lenses that I have for it, but I don't think anyone is interested in them anymore.

I had a good think about it and decided I didn't want to spend over $1000 on a camera just yet in case it ended up just sitting in the drawer gathering dust so i had another look at the Fuji X10 and ended up buying that:

It's a ripper, has a nice usable focal length (28-112mm equiv.), a nice lens (f2.0-f2.8), 2/3rd's" sensor, all the manual controls you want on the camera, solid build (magnesium alloy top and bottom plate) and those great rangefinder looks that I love. $599.

If I decide to get into it more I can always buy a bigger set later (the OM-D EM-5 is still on my wish list) and then I have a near SLR quality point and shoot to carry as well.

BTW, the new OM-D Olympus will take the old OM style lenses (with an adaptor!)

One cool feature is the panorama mode where you just set the angle, spin the camera around and it stitches it together:

I am also getting into the software lightroom which is like photoshop. I touched up some of the pictures in it but was surprised at how little they needed. A couple of shots from around Ft Lauderdale after I got it:

It can get a nice shallow depth of field when towards the end of the focal length:

Well, my Panasonic underwater camera is history.

I was using it on holidays and I was on a boat going to snorkel with sea lions. Perfect! thinks I, I can finally can get to use it what it was made for.....

My son was playing with it and opened it up, he shut it but it got water in it as soon as I jumped in, must have got some beach sand or something on the seal.

Always check the seals before taking them into the water!

(Just like it says in the manual....)
