BATANGAS CITY, Philippines—(UPDATE) At least 77 persons from 17 families have evacuated from the Taal Volcano Island following the series of volcanic tremors that prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to raise Alert Level 2 on the island.
The evacuees were ferried to the mainland of Talisay town on Saturday night, said Senior Superintendent Alberto Supapo, Batangas police director, on Sunday.
The evacuees were among the 2,210 residents of the island who opted to voluntarily leave starting at 9 p.m. Saturday for fear that the volcano would erupt anytime, said Supapo.
Three families were housed at the Venancio Trinidad Senior Memorial School in Talisay while the remaining 14 families stayed with their relatives in Poblacion, Talisay, Supapo said.
Jing Segismundo, Batangas provincial information officer, said the evacuees are from sitios (subvillages) Tabla, Tibag and San Isidro on Taal Volcano Island.
Segismundo said local authorities would implement forced evacuation if alert level 3 or a higher alert was raised.
Alert level 3 means a probable eruption or strong changes in the eruption patterns in the next 10 days.
Alert level 4 means the volcano will erupt anytime and alert level 5 is issued when the eruption is in progress.
Lorence Baňez, Science Research Assistant for the Taal Volcano observatory, said Alert Level 2, which meant increasing restiveness which could lead to eruption, was raised Saturday after they recorded 31 volcanic quakes between April 8 and 9.
Baňez added they also noted an increase in the carbon dioxide level around the volcano, indicating an “anomalous gas release” from the depth of the volcano.
Elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the air can cause damage to plants. When inhaled, it could cause dizziness, fainting and headache, said Banez.
People and animals could also die of asphyxiation from carbon dioxide inhalation, added Banez.
With the raising of Alert Level 2, the Daang Kastila trail, used mostly be tourists who wanted to get close to the volcano, is strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate, said Baňez.

    Tagaytay city

Very nice place, hip area for the rich and famous of Manila to have their "cold" home , chalet near the city. There is a temperature drop of a good 10 degrees compared to the City, often more, take your jacket.

Once up in Tagaytay you feel like on the collar of a huge volcanoe, look down on a lake about 300 meters and find the actual volcanoe Taal in the middle of the lake. The volcanoe holds another lake, cannot be seen from up Tagaytay. I got a friend owning a resort on the lake shore, he told me once that normally there are 4000 people on the volcanoe island and if erupting a big gaz cloud could cover the isalnd and asphixiate those guys. The official figures say there are only 2000 souls living on the volcano.
That guys resort on the lakeshore is 6 km water away from volcano and he feels safe and far. So i should be ok with my 20 or 30 km...

Most pictures taken from the volcanoe by the tourist are wrong, they shoot a secondary volcano, but the one that has a nice volcanoe shape. The actual volcano contains another lake, that one just increases in temperature and chemical gazes actually.

Some pics will follow, but hopefully not with big flames seen from my place !

I'm often up there and will be this friday to get new shots. Taal lake holds a unique specie of small fish only found there.

Last big eruption was around 1780 and lasted over 6 month, gosh, strong little volcano threw out quite a few tonnes of lava and stones, hash , another eruption, smaller took place near 1900, will try find correct dates in next posts...

    Eruption history by wikipedia

    Eruption history

There have been 33 recorded eruptions at Taal since 1572.
The first eruption of which there is any record occurred in 1572, the year the Agustinian friars founded the town of Taal on the shores of of the lake (on what is now San Nicolas, Batangas). In 1591, another mild eruption took place featured by great masses of smoke issuing forth from the crater. From 1605 to 1611, the volcano displayed such great activity that Father Torna de Abreu had a huge cross of anubing wood erected on the brink of the crater.[14]

The dormant Binintiang Malaki (Big Leg) Crater is the center of the 1707 & 1715 eruption.

Between 1707 and 1731, the center of activity shifted from the Main Crater to other parts of Volcano Island. The eruptions of 1707 and 1715 occurred in Binitiang Malaki crater (the cinder cone visible from Tagaytay). Minor eruptions also emanated from the Binintiang Munti crater on the westernmost tip of the island in 1709 and 1729.

A more violent activity happened on September 24, 1716, when the whole southeastern portion of the crater (Calauit), opposite Mount Macolod, was blown out. The 1731 eruption off Pira-Piraso or eastern tip of the island created an island.[15] No studies had been done to determine whether Napayon or Bubuin Island was formed in the eruption, or just a pumice raft.

Activity returned to the Main Crater in 1749, and it was remembered for being particularly violent (VEI = 4). Then came the great 200-day eruption of 1754, the greatest eruption of Taal which is described below.[13][14]

Taal remained quiet for 54 years except for a minor eruption in 1790, not until March 1808 did another big eruption occur. While this outbreak was not as violent as the one in 1754, the immediate vicinity were covered with ashes to a depth of 84 centimetres (33 in). It brought great changes in the interior of the crater, according to chroniclers of that time. Before, the bottom looked very deep and seemed unfathomable, but at the bottom, a liquid mass was seen in continual ebullition. After the eruption, the crater had widened and the pond within it had been reduced to one-third and the rest of the crater floor was higher and dry enough to walk over it. The height of the crater walls has diminished and near the center of the new crater floor, a little hill that continually emitted smoke. On its sides were several wells, one of which was especially remarkable for its size.[15]
On July 19, 1874, an eruption of gases and ashes killed all the live stock on the island. From November 12 to 15, 1878, ashes ejected by the volcano covered the entire island. Another eruption took place in 1904 as a result of which a new outlet was formed in the southeastern wall of the principal crater.

The last eruption from the Main Crater was in 1911 which obliterated the crater floor creating the present lake.

    And in 1965, a huge explosion sliced off a huge part of the island, moving activity to a new eruption center, Mount Tabaro. Eruptions have also been recorded in 1634, 1635, 1641, 1645, 1790, 1825, 1842, 1873, 1885, 1903, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1976 and 1977.

A lake is actually inside the crater of the volcano.( in the big crater not this baby one again...)

^Am keeping an eye on it from my place (Lipa City, Batangas) as well. Typically, the large majority of the residents will refuse relocation.

Live up on the ridge just past the Alfonso turning. Reckon it will take a long time to fill Lake Taal before anything flows over the ridge.

Went up Tagaytay yesterday and some smoke was seen early morning was told.

They now evacuated all habitants of the volcano itself. It is normally not allowed to live on the volcano but well...

Here a link to an article that explains how unique is this volcano that is on an island where there is a lake and the volcano is an island on the lake and the crater has a lake and the lake has another island...

Bestvue, txs for link, but once again it is the wrong part of the volcano in the pic...

As per today, they register earthquakes, about 15 daily in average and the Lake temperature raised 1 degree Celcius.

Last strongest eartquake on the volcano island was scaled at 3.
