A couple of days in Baler, Aurora

Weekend before last, I went up to Baler with TizShe and 2 of her cousins.

Francis Ford Coppola came to Baler in 1976 to film 'Apocalypse Now' .

Ferdinand Marcos agreed to let him hire elements of the Philippine armed forces for the film.
The Huey helicopters he hired were the same Bell UH-1 Iroquois model used by U.S. forces in Vietnam.

Legend has it that surfing in the Philippines was born after the film crew left, leaving a few of the surf boards behind for the locals.

    These days, Charlie does surf!

There's a few other things to visit in the surrounds other than just the beach.

    There's also the Hanging Bridge.

Which is way less scary now than it was a few years ago.

Last time we were there, TizShe wouldn't cross as it felt too unsafe.

It still moves quite a bit under foot, but it "seems" more safe these days.

It looks like you all had fun ... again. And the girls seemed to get the hang of surfing quite quickly. Well done all.

If I put it down or leave it somewhere then its sure to disappear.

Not Just A Beach. Another selection of clips which also include the visit to the 600 year old Balete Tree and also the Hanging Bridge.

Good report mate. I would imagine Baler or Aurora is not really on the tourist trail so kudos to you for highlighting it. Must be hundreds of places in the PI that are amazing yet get very little attention. Ive lately been wwtching some u tubes by a young Icelandic geezer who manages to put a positive spin on all things filipino goes by the name of Finn Snow and is usually accompanied by his hot GF Sherlynn. He even manages to make the food look good.. quite interesting vids. Like his style.thinking about a quick trip to cebu if i can get cheapish tickets next month.want to escape songkran but hope i dont end up in an Easter version o it

Yes BLD. With over 7,000 islands its not too difficult to find some beautiful spots that aren't overrun by tourists.

You just have to spend a little bit more time travelling.

I don't really think I'll ever go to Boracay.

@Tizme - thanks for the vids, pics and stories. They're great. I just saw this now, as I've been busy with work & life lately. Not on TD that often.

@BLD - it'll be crazy busy during Holy Week/Easter season, so I don't know if that will be a good time for you to travel here - unless you don't mind crowds and queues everywhere - airports, seaports, etc.

Baler in Aurora province is becoming an up & coming destination, so is La Union in the North - both for surfing. Kudos to Tizshe et al for trying & getting the hang of it - I've never tried.

I'll be hiking to Mt. Sawi (a 3/9 mountain) and Dingalan next weekend. Dingalan is also in Aurora province. It will be a hike + beach activity, so that will be interesting. Hopefully I'll be able to post pics.

@Tizme - if you haven't been, check out Maniwaya island (near Marinduque) and Burias Island (near Masbate). Or Laki Beach + Five Fingers in Zambales/Bataan. They're doable as day trips or weekend trips, and can be reached by land/boat from Manila. I saw those places posted on an FB group that I'm a member of. Tour/hike agencies are posting their activities and looking for joiners. Oh, and Calaguas and Caramoan Islands in the Bicol region. Or Tingloy Island + Masasa beach near Mabini/ Anilao in Batangas.

    Cheers and happy travels!

    Thanks Katie.

I just arrived back from Penang & Langkawi last night.

I might be grounded for a while to save some pesos after so many recent trips.

Keep a look out for my Penang & Langkawi thread !!

    @Tizme - cheers!

I've just been on a DIY trip with friends to Bituin Cove in Nasugbu, Batangas last April 9 holiday. We carpooled and it took us ~2.5 hours to get there.

The beach was nice, fine cream-colored sand and the waters were very clear. There were only 2 huts for rent (500 php) and those were already taken by the time we arrived. It's good we brought our own tent. Accommodations were tents only, and shower/ toilets were crude (pail & bucket), so it's not for hi-so or squeamish ppl. You must also bring your own food with you - we brought adobo and fresh vegs. It's a nice place and doable as a day trip or o/n, provided you bring your own tent. It's still relatively unknown - only a few ppl were there, despite the holiday. There's a hill where you can climb to have great views and photo ops.

The problem is, some ppl lack discipline and left their rubbish on the beach or sea, despite various signages to dispose of trash properly (and trash bins were present too). Our group picked up some rubbish along the way - we even found a bottle of Mountain Dew floating in the water near the beach! Makes one both angry and sad at the same time.

OK, rant over. I'll try to post pics of Bituin Cove, Mt Sawi and Dingalan - if and when I have time.

    Happy safe travels!
