Short thread - Anawangin Cove + Baguio City

Hi all, this will be a short pic thread, since I didn't take too many pics during this trip.

Last February, there was a 3-day weekend in PI, so some friends and I took the opportunity to travel a bit. Our destination was Anawangin Cove in the town of San Antonio, province of Zambales (Eastern coast, Luzon Island). San Antonio is a small town a few km farther north of Olongapo City and Subic Bay. To those not in the know, Subic was once home to an American base (Subic Naval Base). There are also lots of beach resorts along the coast of Subic, but that wasn't what my group wanted. We wanted somewhere less mainstream/ commercial and more primitive. As such, we chose Anawangin Cove.

This was a DIY trip and we used public transport all throughout. To get to Anawangin Cove, we boarded a Victory Liner bus (with A/C) bound for Santa Cruz, Zambales and asked to be dropped off at the town of San Antonio. The bus ride took ~5H, with a 20(?) min stop at Victory Liner station in Olongapo City - to drop off many passengers and for toilet breaks and/or leg stretching. Re: the bus journey, most of it was smooth, except when entering or leaving Olongapo.

For most of the directions on how to get to the Cove, I used the blog below. I also contacted the boat operator mentioned in the blog. The boat took us from Barangay (village) of Pundakit/ Pundaquit to the Cove.

The bus dropped at off at the San Antonio municipal Hall. We then had lunch at the nearby public market, then bought supplies (food, water & drinks) for our stay at the Cove. This was upon the advise of the tour operator - he said it's better to buy/bring our own food. He said there would be small restos/shacks selling food in the Cove, but they would cost more. Then we hired a tricycle to bring us to bring us to the village, where we met up with the boatmen (there were 2) who took us to the Cove. The boat ride was ~30 min. For this trip, it's best to bring a backpack rather than a wheelie case, and also waterproof your things. We and our backpacks (exterior) got a little wet from the boat ride.

    The very helpful blog:

Pics will be on the next post.

On with the pics. Town Hall of San Antonio, Zambales

Short thread - Anawangin Cove + Baguio City-img_20190224_113611-jpg

Village (barangay) of Pundakit which serves as the jump off point to the Cove. The Cove may also be reached via land by trekking across that mountain, Mt Pundakit (~5H trek, minor hike with 3/9 difficulty).

    Thanks for the repost, Chitty.

As for accommodations in the Cove, it's mostly tents or small, non-A/C huts (the huts were on the other side of the Cove). We didn't bring our own, so we rented them from the boat owner (400 php/tent)

Let's see if a panorama pic will work

Short thread - Anawangin Cove + Baguio City-img_20190224_175329-jpg

We just sat at the beach on tarps that we brought - no lounge chairs or umbrellas, and watched the sunset.

Most of the Cove has no electricity, so we came prepared with flashlights. There were some solar powered "street lamps" near the beach. Some bigger groups made bonfires and cooked their own food. We saw groups with pots and pans, grilling racks and butane stoves. My group opted for the easy way out, and bought cooked food (rice + pork adobo + vegs) from the market to serve as our dinner. For breakfast, we had bread and fruits. For the 2nd day's lunch, we had it at the public market again.

Ive got a few friends that bought beachside land in pundakit over 30 years ago. Beautiful place with a view of the small islands offshore ( Capones?)

@toot - thanks for the reposts

@BLD - there are 2 small islands near Pundakit: Capones and Camara islands. We went to both on the 2nd day, on the way back to Pundakit and civilization. Your friends must've been lucky (and wise) to have bought that property many years before.

Since Anawangin Cove (and nearby Nagsasa Cove) don't have electricity and mod cons, another way to do this holiday is to stay at a beach resort in Pundakit and go for a day trip to one of the coves. There are several beach front resorts now at Pundakit, many with a/c rooms. Upon our return to Pundakit, we stopped at one resort and asked if we could take a shower, since we were hot (and a bit wet) from the boat ride back - it was near noon. We used their shower (php 30 fee) and felt human again.

After that, we hired a trike to take us back to the town proper (and market) for lunch, then bus to Olongapo, then another bus to Dau, where we spent the night. The next morning, we boarded a bus bound for Baguio City.

According to the trike driver, Nagsasa Cove is more beautiful, and there's a waterfalls that ppl can trek to. However, we chose Anawangin Cove since it's nearer (30 min boat ride), versus Nagsasa (1.5H boat ride). The coves are hidden from civilization by a mountain range.

As I've mentioned earlier, another way to reach the coves would be to hike via the mountains. There are tour groups on FB offering those hikes - I might join one of them in coming months.

More pics later, when I've more time and Internet is better...
