    Tagalog question

    Probably the first of many.

In English the question "would you like?" and "do you like?" have different meanings, but in Tagalog the question is the same for both "gusto mo ba?"

Why is there no distinction between an offer of something and a preference for it, or are there phrases that can be used.?

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

I don't speak Tagalog but it sounds to me to be a mentality/culture/attitude/linguistic/understanding thing.
Just as in English "Do you want" with "to go and do the dishes now?" if spoken in a particular tone by a particular authority, it's a polite way of saying "GO and do the dishes now" but "Do you want" spoken in a different context with "an apple?" is actually asking. English native speakers know the difference almost instinctively.

You'll probably find that there is indeed a phrase for "do you like" in Tagalog.
In English "would you like" and "do you want" are often interchangeable.

I'm leaving this to Kate, as my Tagalog isn't good enough. I do know they hate tenses.....my wife's English is great, other than refusing to use tenses much of the time. Just doesn't track......

    The wife says it's context....

Gusto mo bang uminom nang kape? "Would you like to drink coffee?"

Diba gusto mo kape? "Do you like coffee?

However, she rarely speaks tagalog, her family uses a different dialect.

Often the case with languages in these parts, eh?

    More often than in English.

And it's true, tenses don't seem worth the effort a lot of the time.

So what's the beef? Same same but different. Neo, don't think too mutt.

Would you like a coffee? —> Gusto mo ba ng kape?

Do you like coffee? -> Gusto mo ng kape?

I like/want coffee -> Gusto ko ng kape.

I like coffee very much. -> Gustong-gusto ko ng kape.

The word "gusto" is used for both like & want. It's a simple language and the most common vowel used is "a".

@Neo, you owe me a coffee. If you're learning Tagalog, then I take it that the romance with Ms Dubai is going well. Have you learned how to sing karaoke yet?

Btw, I agree w/ topper's wife that it's usually in context, or sometimes it's the tone; I'm a native Tagalog speaker.

Yeah. It's not a very word specific language. Context (and occasionally guessing) is key.
