@patsy - cheers & thanx for the luv. The peeps here just have to accept that I look good in a skirt, just like the way you look good in a bikini. Heh.

If y'all are curious abt how I look like, y'all just have to take the word of the Burmese immigration officer from Myawaddy. He said I was 'very bootiful' & that I should visit Myanmar again. Heh...

@headworx - no, I don't mind, thanx for the pix! They're very bootiful too. More bootiful than my pix, lol. I think I saw that Coco Beach but from afar, when the boat going back to Batangas passed by Sabang pier to pick up passengers. I boarded the boat from Muelle pier. When I saw Sabang beach that day, I didn't like it - I wasn't impressed. But I suppose it's a good beach for boaties & divers.

In the 3 days that I was in PG, it was always cloudy in the afternoon, so my beach pics weren't so nice. But then, I didn't want to always expose my delicate skin to the midday sun. Heh...

I liked PG more than Boracay. It's less touristy, cheaper and there's more to do, aside from the beach. But then, Mindoro is a bigger island than Boracay. In the 3 days that I was in PG, I went to 3 beaches and 2 waterfalls. Took lots of pics of beaches & bitches a(female dogs, heh).

Plus, I saw goats in Galera! That's the icing on the cake!

Am posting from fone, can't post from laptop & my PB doesn't load. Will try to post more pics nxt time. Pls bear w/ me, as I have crappy net.

Well, katie...At least we know there is such a skirt available!...And we think you're "bootiful" for other reasons, as well...

Well written thread...Don't know Sophia, but I'm sure she's a lovely girl...Prolly has a few "skirts" of her own...

Sabang bay was once a beautiful beach, with a superb and biodiverse reef offshore, great for casual diving or snorkelling. It's still a beautiful bay incidentally- the trick is to get up high, overlooking the bay. It's worth the walk up a few stairs, and gets you away from the noise (and sleaze) of the village centre.

So, what happened- the pernicious effects of mass tourism? Nope, it was long before that. Dynamite happened, that's what. The local villagers got lazy, and over a period of several years destroyed the reef with dynamite in their search for fish. So then with little or no reef left, the beach all but washed away. Now there is just dead coral and a fraction of the fish there once were. Shame.

I have very fond memories of Sabang- I owned half of a small resort (all of eight bungalows) up on the hill for about 4 years, from 1989-'93. There was no pier back then- you got the ferry from Batangas to Pto Galera, then a banca to Sabang. In dry season jeepney was a cheaper option- but impossible in the wet, and dangerous. Plentiful weed, beautiful view and sunsets, well chilled out. Then down to the village for a night out. Sabang rocks on pretty late- I assume that's still the case. Good eating too.

I notice that Pto Galera and White Beach have expanded a lot since my days. Not surprising I suppose. Puerto was a bit of a dump back then frankly- although the harbour has to be one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. Sabang was kind of a hybrid backpackers, divers and nawty boys resort, with a small but growing resident expat element. Now it seems mainly about the diving, with a bit of nightlife thrown in for good measure. It had/has it's own charm, not to mention three GoGo bars! But essentially, it's a typical Filipino fishing village that became a backpackers then tourist destination- not a resort destination developed from the ground up- and it shows. To many of us, that was it's charm actually. I may well go back one day for a visit- I daresay a few people will remember me too.

Anyway, great report Katie- thanks for sharing. Made me feel all nostalgic.

^^Thanks, Sabang for sharing the memories of "your" beach. Sorry if I didn't like "your"pics, I'm sure you are a "vely hansum man".

I took pics of White Beach & Sabang Beach, as well as some coastlines which are still relatively untouched & "vely bootiful". The roads leading to the waterfalls were great & had very nice views. Will post pix of those later, hopefully when my net cooperates.

@bb - I'm sure Sophia & friends have skirts, as well as other outfits. Heh...

Most Pinoys don't have this L/R problems w/ pronunciation. But some have B/V & F/P problems. So, same-same but different. Cheers!

Mindoro, paradise next to Manila, love that island...

txs for sharing...Ya missed a few ports, like if you wanna go Mindoro Occidental it is Abra de Ilog you need... Then i Abra de Ilog is a sunken Ferry that went to Sablayan a decade ago, sadly lays there and was never replaced... it is take it easy over there...

Abra de Ilog and Puerto Gallera have no road connection, may be in 20 years...

They plan a tunnel or bridge, whatever from Batangas to Mindoro, in the next few décennies...
Monday,Tuesday, then it goes WTF !

^thanks for the info, forreachingme. I didn't go to those ports that you mentioned since I only had 3 days vacation. However, it was enough to have a taste of Puerto Galera and what it had to offer. I spent roughly the same amount of time in Boracay same time last year, so it's nice to compare the two places.

Last January, a friend and I traveled from Caticlan to Bulalacao port by ferry, then over land from Bulalacao to Calapan - took us ~3 hours, night travel in a minivan. If you remember from the map of Mindoro, Bulalacao is located on the SE, Calapan on the NE part of the island. Most of us peeps were going back to Batangas/Manila from Xmas holidays in the Visayan provinces. Most of us were asleep in the minivan, as it was ~2am when we reached Bulalacao port. Since it was Jan. 2 or 3, there were many vans waiting at Bulalacao port even at that time (2 am), waiting to transport passengers.

So we boarded the minivans, then most of us slept during the journey through winding mountainous roads. At one point, I woke up and I saw that our minivan was almost hit by a bus trying to overtake us on that zigzaggy road. I think my heart skipped a beat that time, and I said a little prayer. I looked around to see if my vanmates had also seen that close call, but all of them were asleep. When my heart rate had normalized, I went back to sleep and woke up when we were about to reach Calapan port. Later on, I told my friend about that close call, and she said that the Lord protects us, and maybe indeed, he did. (Please, no comments about my friend - I'm not very devout but she is, and I respect that.)

At Calapan port, my friend had to queue again for tickets to the next ferry to Batangas. I was in charge of taking care of our bags, and I got friendly with the mom of a large family who took a holiday in Boracay and got in the same ferry to Bulalacao port, then to Calapan. We were all chance passengers and there were crazy long lines at the ports for tickets back to Batangas/Manila.

If I were to do it again (go to the Visayas during xmas season), I would pre-book all my tickets, and not travel by land at night! One close call like that is enough to last me for a long time...

    Anyway, on with the show...

My last photo posted was at the highway leading to White Beach. You'll have to walk 150-200 meters to reach the sea. I passed by this resort, which had the right of way leading to the beach. It's called White Beach Lodge and Restaurant. When I passed by, one of the rooms were open and I took a peek. The standard room is ~4x3 m, with toilet inside, with A/C. Pretty standard and adequate for the needs of most locals (who were their clients). I saw this place on Agoda, but didn't choose it since I wanted to be away from the main tourist areas.

Upon reaching White Beach, this is what I saw. The view to the left...

The view to the right. It was the Sunday of a 3-day weekend, so lots of weekenders.

    Some establishments on the beachfront...

Construction ongoing.. these were taken in the late afternoon. It's monsoon season, so most afternoons were cloudy. I bet that the beach (and pics) would be better in the hot sunny mornings.

After a bit of sitting and chilling, I took a walk and snapped some pics. As I've mentioned in other threads, white foreigners are called "kano", short for Amerikano. Ladies are "kana" (Amerikana). It's not derogative, just a general term, so if you come to PI and hear it, don't be offended. It's similar to gringo, farang (Thailand), barang (Cambodia), foringga (Myanmar). I saw this Kano and his partner being fitted up with life vests - prolly going out for some snorkelling.

    Saw these massage ladies too
