    Pattaya Traffic Police Bundling Charges

Now in the old days you may have been driving around in Pattaya on your untaxed and uninsured motorbike, whilst drunk, without a crash helmet and get caught jumping a red light at night with your lights off, the odds were you would get a ticket for no crash helmet, maybe a 200baht fine, but things are changing.

It seems now they are doing several of the charges to get the money in so to speak, most fines are around 500baht or more which is 2 to 3 days wages for your average Thai so quite a big hit, but they are now doing multiple charges.

My son got caught a couple of nights ago, no id, no crash helmet, no driving license, this was whilst jumping a red light, they ticketed him a 1,200baht fine for that little lot, not many 18 year old students can afford that sort of money, probably 2 weeks wages for your average 18 year old, expect juvenile crime to rise to help pay off their fines I think.

Do the crime pay the fine, I hope they clamp down and make this common practice, cunts might start to take notice of the traffic laws.

I noticed when I was in Pattaya last month that many riders were no longer wearing helmets. I guess they need a sharp reminder every now and again.

The bundling of offences seems a bit unfair though especially on younger Thais. Is most of it going as tea money, or are official receipts and trips to the police station to pay still happening?

Proper receipts and pay at the station, bundling the charges for farangs i think is fair enough, but there are so many Thais that really can't afford that sort of fine, to many of them that could be 6 days wages or more.

Then your son is a c**t. Where did he get the money to pay the fine?

Stick him in chokey for a weekend of arse pounding and maybe he'll learn his lesson.

Actually scratch that, he might learn that's a good way to earn the money to pay the fines.

I believe a phone call got it down to 200baht and he paid it, but thats not the point, 1,200baht is still way too much for basically a student.

fine is based on the offense and not who or what the offender is.

Been doing that for awhile now 200bt for each offence where it used to be 200bt for the lot

This helmet and drivers license campaign already seems to be fizzling out like most safety campaigns do in Thailand. For a while a few months back, I was running into a police checkpoint almost every time in or out of Pattaya, now almost never see them.

No offense to your son, but some of these people, especially the ones stupid enough to ride or drive on the wrong side of the street need to be removed from the gene pool. The stupidity it takes to ride a motorcycle on the wrong side of the street, especially though an intersection defies comprehension.

Good. Fine people, that aren't fit to be on the road, off of it. Thai roads will be much safer then. If you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime.
For anyone driving in Korat, they now have cameras on their traffic lights. 500 Baht fine.

And smoking on a train in uk is £1000. what sort of young kid can afford that? its always the adults who pay and this is what the cops are thinking.

If they enforced the laws and fined people in this country for their insane driving habits, the police wouldn't bother with tea money as Thailand could then afford to pay them a proper wage.

Ah, such great parenting. Didn't 'ground' the kid; didn't take away his moto privileges. Will he grow up to just be another indifferent somchai? Maybe dad needs some parenting lessons...

Wonderful! Then following this (lack of) logic, the penalty for any crime should be based not equitably on the law, but the ability of the guilty party to pay (or serve jail time if appropriate). Do the crime, suffer the consequences!

I suppose the choice is quite simple. follow the law or pay the franchise fee for the right not to do so. Clearly your son puts a high value on being able to drive around without no id, no crash helmet, no driving license, and jumping a red lights.

If he and the other students find 1200 a bit steep, its not like its hard to avoid these kinds of franchise fees is it. And what kind of student can afford 1200 Bhat fines, easy the kind that can afford to buy motorbikes.

    Not his motorbike, my girlfriends.

Anyway he got his driving license, scored 30 out of 30 on the test, tomorrow he starts to learn to drive the car, this I think he will enjoy, it has a top speed of about 130mph, and 0-60mph about 6 or 7 seconds, think he would have prefered my truck though as that power wheel spinned in the first 3 gears on normal roads, had to get rid of it though as it wasn't very stable on the roads.
