One does wonder at the ferocity of these attacks often arising out of petty disputes which, given the venue in this case and the calibre of British drunks attracted thereto, must not come as a surprise to the bar staff.

Doubtless the chap made some disparaging remark or two but to attack him in the manner described scarcely seems proportionate and is hardly likely to be conducive to good business.

I think it goes to the heart of the relationship between male Thai staff and their patrons. No matter how offensive or repugnant the customer may be he will usually always be in a superior position, have that much more wealth and has an economic future the typical idle, spot picking, vain chickenhead lout can only ever dream about. In dishing out the violence the bar staff were probably just venting their frustrations at a world which must seem cruelly unjust to them.

Whereas the chap will recover and return home to a civilised life those two chickenheads will still be bottom feeders subsisting in a futile life bereft of any hope - and they probably know it.

Couldnt agree more. The beating i reported in the OP wasnt a ''sort the cheeky bugger out'' type of attack. It was nasty and excessive. The spite and hatred was pouring out of them.

I was told by an old Thai lady , wife of a German i know thay if there is a fight in a bar at any time to get up and walk out ( pay bar first i think ) and get away , because when the police come they will arest every one with in a wide range involved or not.

That is the cheap end of town at the back of the market and the Soi that runs through to 2nd road (Soi Villa?).
Drink yourself stupid for 35 baht a pop, then either stagger off to a better part of town or hang around to watch it kick off, pretty much guaranteed that shit happens in the bars there.
If you're looking for a fight Gary, you're more likely to find it around there than in Walking Street.

Obviously they thought he deserved it, he was probably being a rude asshole when he was discussing his bill.

Complaing because you have been charged more than you feel you should have shouldnt result in the kind of beating this guy was subjected too.

With hindsight he should have just paid up, left the place and not giving them his custom again. He signed his own death warrant by getting involved in a argument. No doubt the Thais felt they lost face and had to get it back the only way they knew how.

Then i crossed the road to go out again and these niggers started hassling me,(i didnt realize how late it was, too late to drift around) telling me to buy them beer cuz they could get me a better deal. I just said no and one of the guys wouldnt let me walk away. I asked him "what are you really going to do, shoot me ?" I told him I had a gun in my hotel room. Then he was like no man i just want to get you a deal and i want a beer blah blah. I just walked to where his buddies where selling beer and said "i want a beer and this prick wants one too" His buddies started laughing their ass off cuz i called hima a prick and then the other guy got pissed off. I guess he "lost face". He was like "get out of here man" i told him to take it easy and i just walked away. I also told him that I am from British Columbia and BC weed is better .
