An afternoon at "The Floating Markets", Jomtien.

Now I like to get out with the kids on a Sunday afternoon and thought I would have a look at the new floating markets in Jomtien just south of Pattaya.

You will find these markets on the Sukhumvit Rd driving south away from Thepresit Road towards Rayong and just opposite the Dinosaur Park.

    You can't miss these signs,

    Nor the windmill!

Now it was kinda hot and humid yesterday but when we walked onto the markets it became quite bearable and particularly with the nice breeze coming off the market klongs!

Now I believe these markets are quite new and I was really impressed with the construction and facilities and product on offer with plenty of small regional food restaurants as well as some arts and crafts stalls.

There was hardly a farang to be seen but of course plenty of Chinese.

And of course our floating hawkers!

This is I believe the main restaurant and I have been told the food here is rather nice. We (my family) stuck with the somtam and sticky rice and when sitting in the many quaint sitting areas overlooking the water and watching the world go by.

I also got a few good ideas and from out visit and with regard to our Klong at home in Pattaya.

They set bamboo floating retaining frames in the water and filled them with this water lilly which looked quite nice. I also liked the idea of the water pump and rotating water wheel.

Now one shop we did stop in was the concentrated pure fruit juice offering. Bloody delicious and worth a try.

All in all a nice way to spend an afternoon and I am certainly gunna do more of what the Thais do and that is to sit down on a cane mate and chill out eating authentic Thai village style food.

Again if you are down this neck of the woods its not a bad place to kill an afternoon.

Oh by the way plenty of parking, clean toilets and even an up-market chemist and if you turn up with a hangover!

Not really sure Nat but most of the woman wearing those hats were chinese tourists.

Really it is a pleasant place to visit and in contradiction to how many see and expect Pattaya.

    Nice photos. Thank you.
Also noteworthy that there are 2-3 massage shops on the water for only 150 baht for 1 hour of Thai massage. Good deal and very tranquil if no groups.

Yes Impact the prices for most things were very cheap and my wife also purchased some clothes for my daughters.

I was surprised by the number of people there as the rest of Pattaya (well the tourist areas) is very quite at the moment.

I think it would have been busy the last few days- it was the Pattaya Music Festival. Anyone make it there?

Anyway, nice one LT- I've been meaning to go to the floating markets, and pleasantly surprised that the prices are reasonable. Free to get in and free parking too.

Their Web site says they are the biggest floating markets in the world- not too sure about that though.

It probably covers a couple of Rai, it is just a pond that it is set on, about 60cms deep.

^^^ Well there wasn't a young music fan to be seen mate.

Mostly middle aged tourists and Thai families.

Really for a Thai tourist area no double charging and very good clean amenities and the Moo Yang and Isarn food was delicious.

I just got a PM from Chitown asking if he could post some pictures as he was there as well on the weekend. Bastard didn't let me know he was in town.

Go for it mate and I am sure your pictures are better than mine.

Plus I was with 3 females and a disgruntled male and had other things to concentrate on.
