Thai Party in Pattaya, Thai Generosity

So we have my girlfriends long lost sister who she hasn't seen for nearly 20 years visiting Jomtien, she moved from Chanthaburi at a young age and got married in Phuket, suddenly they decided to get reaquantied with the family and travel round Thailand, now I am all for that until I heard what it involved, the picking them up at the bus station aint a problem although in all reality it would be cheaper if they got a taxi, but hell lets not get petty here, they been travelling a lot, what did shock me is that we are expected to pay for a hotel for them, they can't stay at my place as maybe smells of me smoking may waft upstairs and upset them, so we got them a top end hotel in Jomtien with nice sea views, hmm I don't stay at those sort of places but we are paying for them to, this didn't seem a good or fair deal to me.

So there we are whopping out just under 3,000baht for these travelling parasites, one of the other sisters paid for everyones meal at Bang Saray which was just over 3,000baht, I mean fok me we got a lot of money into these peoples holiday and they have done fok all for anybody, and at this time we really cant afford it, my son has just started college and we got loads of bills anyway so by this stage of the game I was a bit foked off with Thai hospitality.

Then I was suprised, yet again we were splashing out for food to eat at her sisters house in Jomtien, theres me the cynical bstard going aint we spent enough on them cheap cnuts, yeah that didn't go down well with the girlfriend, but fok me you got to draw the line somewhere.

Anyway we get there and the sisters husband has bought the mother a few bahts worth of gold, yep a big beasty chain, just as a present, he wants to pay me to drive him and the sister up North to Surin for a few days to buy cheap land, I explained the fact that when they see white men the prices get increased and it wouldn't be a good idea, plus I got work to do, they also started handing out large notes to all the family, foking weird.

Anyway lets get back to the party in Jomtien, here's some food.

    BBQ squid,

He was drugged out of his mind so most of it went on the floor

The bbq shrimp he got on the plate.

    as we can see.

Dont look so bad when all the eyeballs and legs are taken off.

Got to keep the Thai people happy with their banana leaf stuff.

Khun DD, I symphonize with your situation. Similar circumstances happened to me with the wife’s family back 13 or 14 years ago. In private, we had a serious discussion on what I thought to be fare and reasonable hospitality to be offered to family members. I mean, I never received similar treatment when visiting family members and was always expected to take care of my own food and hotel bills. Heck, when visiting family members, I was more often than not expected to treat the whole family crew. Not just immediate family but long lost cousins as well. OK, I know the deal now so live and learn. Over the years the message got across and things are a lot better with what I am expected to finance as it relates to family. I must add though, that living out of Thailand in another Asian country and having my wife with me, gainfully employed with the U.S. Govt where she learned the value of what 8 hours a days work is worth.

Hey, it happens but all is on track now. As for your circumstances, well, you have been around the block a few times and you know the ways of the world, I’m sure you will get this resolved to your satisfaction one way or the other. But, what ever you do, assuming that you want to maintain the relationship with your GF,“do it with a smile, calm voice, and in a manner that lets all save face…”

Bollox, smack her one, raise your voice and explain that she has made you lose face by making you get angry!

DD - I'm sure we have all bitten once by these expectations - it's how you manage the situation next time with hindsight (and blinding generosity ) that counts.

I'm sure the news of your generosity will travel very fast to all the other relatives.

The first (and last) time for me was an all expenses paid (inc. air tickets) 2 week vacation for the parents in law at our house.
It was then I learnt to fully appreciate the saying "deep pockets, short arms"

Would I be right to guess this was your GF elder sister. ?

So everyone is forking out for hotel and food for the visitors so that they save enough money to get the old girl a lump of gold.
He gets all the respect for doing it and you get nothing.
    Weird people the thai

I'm not sure why you agreed to the hotel DD, they can either stay in your spare room or pay for themselves, and they can be treated with some of your wonderful home cooking (you still got that pea soup in the freezer?) whilst they're there... no need to eat out when Chef DD is on town

If this sister buggered off to Phuket and got married does that mean the hubby never paid a Sinsot ?
Could be a load of "saving face" going on here

Why didn't you take the gang down to 7-11 for gourmet hotdogs?

All the mustard you like. It's on me!

Nuthin' but the best for the long-lost sister and her parasitic attachment.

Parasitic attachments are common in Thailand, often seen under the guise of chaperones, friends and other excuses not to come alone.

well it takes a turn for the better they have made an offer on our small plot of land we own, suprisingly 25 percent more than what we were asking for it, maybe paying their hotel bill etc was a good idea, shall believe it when we are at the land office exchanging money and papers though

Dinging bells, flashing lights, air horns, waving flags!
Sounds like a typical Thai, "I've got loads of money" gimmick.
Barge poles and smelly, rotton things come to mind.

But first, "SHOW ME THE MONEY".

What I see happening is a promissory note and then when the land is in their name, they forget about about the note.

But, being the business mane that your are Khun DD, I know that you are a little to smart for that.

Yup! With luck, 4 baht a day. We all know that the meaning of "loan" to a Thai family member means "give".

I believe money and work when i get the first lot of cash in my sweaty palm, the land costs 2 bumbags worth of cash or a nice bankers draft, it's real easy, they bring 2 bumbags of cash to the land office or a bankers draft, I don't mind either but prefer cash

^actually DD, I'm willing to up their offer on the land by another 10%.

I just need to come down to Jomtien for a few days to check everything out. Dusit or Amari will do and can you catch the room service tab as well?

I do actually need this money and it would be nice if it did go through, I think it will but i aint spent it yet, although thoughts about 3 weeks during the summer in the UK sounds good for a break, obviously not the area I lived in as that wasn't very nice, but the UK does have some real nice places I have never been to, don't forget I left when I was 26 and all my holidays were spent abroad apart from a couple of Pontins or Butlins holidays as a kid, furthest North I have been is Manchester, hell I have seen more of America and Thailand than I have of the UK
