Cheers for the comments/insights folks. I'm erring towards the Siam Bayshore with a standard room. Its such a fleeting visit, flying solo with M'Sahib staying home in Phuket, a decent room with facilities is all I need, and the time constraints mean it highly unlikely I'll have the time or inclination to use the pool. Google also tells me that it's 7 minutes by taxi to the Lion Pub, so that will work.

The afternoon will undoubtably be on the piss at the Lion, with the evening dependent on what state I'm in when the sun goes down though odds are that it will just be a bimble not too far from the hotel for food and more wets.

Sounds to me like you will be in need of a restorative full English the morning after. Enjoy.

Highly likely Chas. The occasion is a RBL organised 50th anniversary of Operation Banner.

Wise choice I think PAG all things considered. Good value there and its not too bad by the pool which is a nice place to relax whilst you wait to check in at 2pm unless you sort that out before.

What time are you meeting your friends? If early and you're on your own you are probably better off getting a cheaper hotel within staggering distance to where you are drinking especially as most of the big hotels wont let you check in until 2pm
I was pretty chuffed with the deal i got at the the cozy beach . Think it was about 2200 baht for a family room. Nice view over the pool n beach. Didnt see fuck all all of pattaya this time as i was whisked away to the darkside in an uber. Saw even less coming home.

Those standard rooms are like a maze to find at night if you're a bit pissed .
Recommend you stay in the main building for a few bucks more, you wont regret it.
    And don't miss breakfast.

Got an Executive Deluxe room in the main building for a discounted rate of 3.5K inclusive of all taxes, confirmed by email from the reservations supervisor, along with the promise of an early check in circa midday.

Booked a hire car from U-Tapao, which I'll only be using to get me from the airport to the hotel, and return the following morning (after breakfast.....). Flights were cheap, Air Asia Phuket to U-Tapao just over 1K, with return by Bangkok Airways only a little more. Different airlines because of timings.

Last time we was there we couldn't even get near the breakfast buffet counter what with the hoards of Chinese using their sharp elbows. We skipped the buffet the next two mornings.

I've never bothered paying for breakfast buffets at Pattaya hotels.
Not when you can get a full English down the road for 99 baht

I agree re buffets, not a fan myself either. Anywhere you would recommend in the vicinity of Siam Bayshore, or en route back to U-Tapao?

The Pig and Whistle did a nice fry up if you can handle one after a skinful:. They have kippers too.
La Baguette, is a nice French cafe restaurant for a nice eggs benedict or Croque Monsieur

Both are not walkable but in the direction of the airport from your hotel.

Reox does the 99 baht fry up but you'll be sitting around a lot of Chang vest wearing sexpests smoking away

Headworx will be your man for eaterie suggestions in Pattaya.

Thought that I would post this if anyone is interested. It's not necessary to be a member of the RBL or even to have served in HM Forces to attend. All welcome.

Bert, who runs the RBL up there is a lovely bloke, and I have my own views on what's happening to the NI vets in UK now. I just don't think this is the right way to see justice done.

Write to IDS or Johnny Mercer MP and ask him to raise it in parliament.

    Well said mate.
It was very good of PAG to pass on this information and yes Bert is a nice down to earth bloke....However I shan't be attending.

I served 16 years and left as a Sgt after spending most of the 80s in NI from the hunger strike riots to after the murder of Del and Dave. I quit due to the things that were covered up by the British Government due to the Peace Process..... Not least the bombing of my house (basically the attempted murder of my children) followed by the IRA announcement on 9 December that all wives and children of soldiers had to leave the Province by Xmas Day otherwise they would become legitimate targets..!!!....Try to find anything on BBC about THAT!!!........Fuck me it pisses me off to hear about what is happening in UK..

Like many soldiers I am still emotionally struggling with things and the last thing I want to do is to get "suited and booted" to pay my respects. What a load of Bollocks. I keep 6 poppies on my porch and have a quiet morning coffee with them every day. Each poppy is somebody that didn't make it out of NI.... So much to say ....

Just a bump for the event at the Lion Pub tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. I've changed my flight to an early evening one today, and plan to be in the Lion circa 10 p.m. tonight for a recce and an injection of live soul and Tamla music (apparently).

So, made it through there pretty much to plan, though later than anticipated with the flight being slightly delayed, and some crap weather after I left U-Tapao. Google maps didn't seem to do me many much favours either, bringing me into Pattaya at the north end of the Beach Road, and a very slow crawl down to the southern end. This was about 10 p.m. Lived here for 12 years and first time in Pattaya. The sea side of the beach road was wall to wall with obvious freelancers, with all of the large bars opposite pretty much empty from what I could see from the car, with large groups of BG's playing with their phones outside.

Anyway, eventually made the hotel (Siam Bayshore) and the room was fine. Quick shower and change and headed to the Lion Pub via a taxi. Wasn't really impressed, large place with no more than about 10 quite miserable farangs inside, and a very average duo providing live music. I think the Soul and Tamla Motown theme could have infringed the trade description act though.

Had a supper and got a Grab car (impressed) to drop me near to the hotel and Walking Street. Spent a couple of hours having a beer in a few of the live music bars, and was actually surprised by the lack of BG's (compared to the bars I'd passed on Beach Road).

Breakfast in the hotel was fine, with lots of options. I went for a freshly made omelette with crispy bacon.

This is me in the hotel room ready to head to the event at midday.

Quite a good turnout, and of course the afternoon and evening slid into what became a mini marathon session. Not seen a former work colleague of mine for 15 years, and who now has a bar in Pattaya, so he came down for a catch up. His wife picked us both up in the evening for a needed injection of Indian food, then dropped me off at the hotel around midnight. I've had worse weekends for sure.

A group photo of some of those attending, some of the TD Pattaya residents might recognise a few.

Mate could not make it but Bert would have given me a pass.

I'm off to see him now actually.
