    Think you need to define what you call a bar girl, because they range from short time upstairs in the bar, to seldom take a punter home.

    Went to a market in Lao today, it's in the jungle, opens 3 days a week, but no one lives there, nearest village is 30 km away.
    Now there are lots of little bars with girls, but not one room, so no short time, girls play the punters, mostly Thai, no farangs, for drinks and tips.

    Karaoke bars near me, girls seldom get a paying punter, 50 Bt to sit with you, a cut of the drinks, they aren't making much money, but more fun for them then sitting in a stilt hut watching soaps.

    Bigger cities have bars with girls who have day jobs, know one, very pretty girls, 200 Bt an hour to sit with you and flirt They are available for a price, but don't bed anyone if they don't like them.

    There are other farang bars/night clubs where women are on the hunt for good times and farangs are big spenders.

    As said earlier, more bar girls up country then most think and it's not a money spinner, it's fun with a few Baht coming in.

    Pattaya may appear full on, but I've been in bars where girls get few overnight paying punters.

    It really is a wide spectrum from brothel types, party girls to husband hunters, one size does not fit all.

    SG this, they are there because of poverty is more likely a tale for the buffalo, had a husband /wife working for me, free accommodation, electricity and a motorbike, pulling in about 20,000 a month.
    She was very cute, pulled the pin to go work a bar, making sheet rubber was no fun, found a Thai sugar daddy and is set until she gets fat or old.

Then you might not be so prejudice towards the employment these girls find themselves in.
    I'm not prejudiced towards the girls mate... I'm just expressing my opinion...
    Wouldn't it be nice to have an informed opinion instead of stating platitudes and prejudice?

    why must we all blindly agree that all the girls are poor isaan farmers and have no other choice in life?
    Nobody here has claimed anything like that.

    I have given you an example above of a Thai woman who had a good job, but chose to become a sex worker... she is happy with that choice. it was an economic choice not because of necessity/poverty..
    Yes, that happens, so what? Has anyone denied it?

    I am not denying "some" Thai women in the sex industry come from poverty and
    lack options/advantages and may feel compelled to work as whores...
    I don't look down in disdain on that proportion of people, I'm a dick (not a cnut)..

    But can you accept that "some" Thai women in the sex industry chose to work as whores purely for the easy money, not for any lack of options...

    I think that's fair and balanced no?
    It certainly sounds better than what you started with:
    "the vast majority of whores, are willing participants they were not 'compelled' or forced by any factor other than the desire for easy money...

    It's that laziness and lack of self-respect that "compels" **most** women to sell their nether regions..

    Thailand is not even deemed a poor country anymore FFS (and hasn't been for quite some time) so banging on about them having no choice but to sell their hoy - is just pandering to their pathetic excuse..."

    ^ Agree 100%.. when I was living in Korat, I witnessed many girls who certainly were not poor, with good educations, scamper off to Patters to make some easy money...

    It seems the trend, completely accepted... almost the norm... just like having a sponsor/gik... it's becoming ingrained into Thai 'culture'...

    Perhaps 20 years ago, that old stigma of the girls being mostly poor/option-less may have been true... now, nah.....

    Korat.. the door to Isaan... nah... Korat, the door to Pattaya lol...

    Having travelled to the North and North East and seen the grass roots progression of these girls and the pressures of money (debt), keeping face and achieving success that lay on their shoulders – particularly the youngest in the family – when I see a bar girl, no matter how sexy she is trying to be, I find it impossible to see her as anything other than a victim of a system that socially engineers and openly encourages the sex trade.

    What I see in the bar is not a piece of meat to be exploited, but a girl that grew up believing that one day, when she finished school (if possible) she would have a good job and be able to make her parents proud. I don’t see a girl that grew up aspiring to be a dirty old man’s fantasy, nor aspired to have nightly sex with sociopathic western men. I see a girl who naively bought into the idea that her teenage husband would stay faithful and do his best to always support her and her kids, and into the antiquated cultural requirements that a girl must marry the first seemingly decent boy she is seen flirting with.

    I see a girl forced to sell her soul, going against all the beliefs and morals she was brought up with in an attempt to better the future of her family. I see a girl who has sacrificed her own happiness and potentially her mental stability for the benefit of others; no girl should ever have to do that. And then I see a plethora or foreign men coming to exploit, not help as they may proclaim, the unfortunate situation of a woman failed by a society that provides zero social welfare, and does not hold men in the slightest bit accountable for their offspring

    what utter bilge.

    despite what is taught and said, far too many thais have always had the morals of alley cats and offered the slightest temtpation for a pleasurable or profitable experience will selfishly drop whatever they are doing and jump at it.

    they just cant help themselves.

    The thought occurred to me that in any other context he'd be bagging food sellers, taxi drivers, market traders and other self employed as lazy, stupid, lying cheats.

    Ah!

    So it seems that the hierarchy of Thais worthy of vitriol in tax's book goes something like:

    1. Thai prostitutes;
    2. Daylight;
    3. Food sellers, taxi drivers, market traders and other self employed;
    4. Everyone else.

    Billabong is a rip off. You pay a bar fine and get charged lady drinks for a lady who is not even employed by the place. The bar has got it made. Call the girls freelancers and don't pay them a salary

    To add insult to injury, it is now reported that none other than "Secrets", the tourist bar down off Walking Street has copied the Billabong model and is charging barfines for "freelancers". 500 Baht. If you meet her at Secrets, you owe us a barfine. Can you imagine the horror of all this? You blokes allowing the likes of Secrets rip you off in plain sight without any recourse.

    I challenge every poster here to stop............think.........and ask yourself 1 question.

    How many bar girls that you have met claim they come from anywhere else other then the North East/ Issarn.

    I've had several claim Bangkok, but upon further discussion, that's just where they came to work in a factory.

    The strangest part is that we almost never find a lady in Pattaya who came from the south. I guess they all go to Phuket or Koh Samuy to work as prostitutes. On the rare occassion I do find a lady from the "south", I find they are better educated and have more common sense. This is a good thing. I hope they continue to improve the educational system in the North East.

    ps: Rubber trees in the south, rice in the North East. I'm never sure about sugar cane and palm oil. But in summary, most if not all of the ladies come from a farming background, and I don't mean driving tractors. I mean working the fields by hand and backs.

    "the horror" ??

    At a guess, the matter is probably one of complete indifference to 99.99% of this boards readership.

    Ummm, loads mate. As in, loads and loads. Where have you been? I've known them from bangers, the north, the south- and of course bluddy Isaan. Even within Isaan, which is a big place, you will find them to be more from some parts than others- the main 'triangle' seems to be Buriram/Surin/Udon Thani in my observation.

    I even knew an 'OK' girl working in Soi Kola, Surin, from Petchaburi. Seemed a bit strange to move from south to north for her living, but actually that is exactly what she wanted to do- check out the country with a job that gave her mobility and freedom. Her next stop was gonna be Phitsan (Ubon here was a bit boring she'd heard).

    I would venture that one doesn't want to be doing the deed too close to where one resides. It might be very embarrassing for their family if you know what I mean.

    Issan girls head to Phuket, Pattaya and the likes to 'go fishing'.

    I once had a great looking bird from a place called Lam Thap City in Krabi. She won a bit of money on the lottery and went home and opened a salon.
    She used to tell me she didn't trust the Issan girls.
