When i go for my renewals next year, i have been warned, not to go early , as one would normally do, otherwise i will only get a renewal for 1 year instead of the expected 5 yrs. Apparently one has to go the day after it is due..........don't ask me why, i am not Thai !
    From an earlier post.

From memory I believe it is the same as for the original application. Passport with current visa, proof of address and doctors letter.
Also did all the same tests again.

They've gone up to 50 nonsense non relevant questions now I seem to recall. Got to do the same as well this month Kurgen - let us know the crack.

    PROCEDURE
    1) CHECK THE DOCUMENTS
    2) PRINT THE APPLICATION FORM
    3) TAKE ONLY A PHYSICAL TEST
    4) PAY THE FEE / TAKE A PHOTO AND PRINT DRIVING LICENCE
(FEE 505 BAHT AND PLASTIC SMART CARD 100 BAHT)
ADDITIONAL (CHANGE NAME OR ADDRESS CHARGE 50 BAHT)

    REMARK :
    1) IN CASE OF DRIVING LICENCE EXPIRED MORE THAN 1 YEAR
    - TAKE A THEORY TEST
    2) IN CASE OF DRIVING LICENCE EXPIRED MORE THAN 3 YEARS
    - TAKE A THEORY TEST AND PRACTICAL TEST
Seems that if the license has only just expired, you do not need to take the test again. Only the breaking test.

I should have made it clearer. I was only required to take the practical tests. As I originally converted my UK licence to a Thai one, I did not sit the tick test first time around either.
I know offices differ slightly around the country so best to check like Barrylad said.

This thread might have some useful info for those who are interested.

license has to expire, you do not need to take the test again.
If you renew for 1 year, but if you would go the 5 years, then you need to take the test & 1-2 hour lecture.
I went the 5 year after 30 minutes in the lecture room they kicked me out.

    Good luck guys

A day or two before my one year licence expired I went in with the paperwork, paid the fees and got the 5 year licence straight away, no retest.

Usually your 1 yr has to be expired.

Then get a Cert or Residence from Immigration or your embassy, some DoLT do it without, but most major ones need it.

    Health Cert from a clinic.

You won't have to do any tests if your 1 yr DL is expired for less than one year.

have to say they were pretty good in prachin..when the guy put the film on to watch. after about 5 mins he noticed me staring out the window and then switched it to English with Thai subtitles. a few were pissed off that they now had to actually read.

Dito. Changed up from a 1 year to a five year two weeks ago at Nonthaburi. They actually told me to come just before it expired as otherwise I would be driving without one and could be nabbed by the BIB.
