How much to get your lawn cut?

Had two quote from a viilage handiman and an old dorris who asked if she could cut it, they wanted 700 and 500 baht respectively. Now, this is not exactly the MCG we are talking about. This is a piss ant lawn which if I actually owned a mower I could get round in about 5 minutes? Even in the UK a gardener would not ask for that much to cut it - they would feel embarrassed to even say that.

So what is the real rate? Anyone got a helper that would like to earn a bit more? Who will lend me a mower for a couple of beers? Who the hell do these people think they are? lol

That's a tricky one. Sometimes when jobs are so small you have to pay over the odds IMO. I mean, if say 300 baht/hour was the going rate, but you wanted someone to do something that only took 10 minutes. I don't think you can then offer them 50 Baht to do it! It doesn't work like that IMO.

By the time they get there with the mower and do the job, that 5 minutes will be 40 at least. Then what if their mower breaks while he's doing it?

I personally would feel uncomfortable asking somebody to do it for less than 400.

Also depends if they are just a neighbour who should do it for "mates rates" or someone who does that kind of thing for a living, and therefore has to run a pick up and purchase tools etc.

If you want to do it on the very cheap, you will need to borrow a mower and then get a local kid to do it. Is it worth the hassle for a few hundred Baht though?

ahh get fucked - they both are around the village every day with their tools there so none of that applies. It's park up, get mower off side car, cut grass for 5 minutes, and go to the next house to clean their pool or what ever.

Maybe I am cheap, but that jsut seems excessive where the daily wage is 300 baht, to want double that for a few minutes work.

Get yourself a Bosch cutter and edger. Around 2500 baht and do it yourself in half an hour. Thats what we use on our yard, and it works a treat. Although its a few hour job at our place because of the landscaping.

You're probably right mate, and it's a bit unfair for me to comment as I have never been a long term expat. I've always been spending English money when I'm in Thailand. I just can't be doing with haggling for what to me is seen as 2 or 3 pounds. I'd much rather give someone a nice tip and make their day.

It's very different if you are retired or working in LOS though, I realise that.

I'll call you a cheap Charlie, but just under my breath and not on here.

Its not a money thing, i'm only mid 30's and run a business so not on a pension. it's a principal thing, and actually, it is not really a subject for yo uto get involved with as you don't live here and have no idea. It's people with that attitutde that makes these people think they can charge a farang 2 days salary for 10 minutes work and get away with it.

^ So you're working in lOS then just like I said.

Your "principles" as you call them will obviously be different as a result.

I was essentially on year long holidays when I was in Thailand, so feeling the need to be principled and teach the locals how to appreciate money, wasn't on my list of things to do. Which is why I retracted my opinion in my last post.

Other than my input you got three other opinions. Two telling you to buy your own equipment, and one calling you a tight fucker. Sorry if I interrupted the flow of your thread. Lesson learned

Good luck with these tricky life choices that trouble you.

I think we used to pay 200bt to do the lawn when we had the house in On-Nut, or 500bt for the whole day including trimming the trees and sorting out all the borders.

^ I used to pay 500 Baht for about 3 hours, but that was every month.

If you are asking someone to do a one off job, or one that takes only 10 minutes, you can't work out the price pro rata. That's not how things work IMO. Unless it's a kid or a retired neighbour, but not a full time worker.

I often cut and trim my own lawn as well as do the pruning of the trees and bushes and add mulch to the areas that need it but I don't usually do it all at the same time. Over a 3 or 4 consecutive day period, I do different portions of the yard maintenance effort. Prune one day, cut the grass with the mower another day, trim and edge another day, and general yard maint and clean up the 4th day. IT is easier for me that way and allows me time to do other things on each of those other days while at the same time allows me to work when it is less hot.

However, when I do hire out for the grass to be cut, it cost me 1000 baht. 2 or 3 guys come and spend about 3 or 4 hours and they do a good job as they have been doing my lawn when requested for several years now. OK, the wife usually feed them something to eat at lunch time also.

A gardener could be employed full time and then the grass would never need cutting.

    Sorted.

If you PM me I'll give you my missus' number (feel free to take her off my hands full time if you wish - sorry, no returns), the 2 quotes will come down to about 100 baht, and then she'll complain and get some money refunded too. Her flat rate is 400 baht for an initial complaint call then 150 baht for every subsequent call.
(She works particularly well with car insurance companies, aircon cleaners and water pump installation 'engineers'.)

The wanker in my moo baan has a monopoly going. Used to do a small front and back lawn and hedges all round for 500B. Then as it had a brush cutter I did my own lawns and got the wanker in to do the hedges. 500B.... Then I got him to clean up the weeds along the back fence. 500B....When I complained he got bent out of shape so looks like I will be doing everything myself. No worries, the hedges are going to be cement walls soon so I will just do the lawns myself. About a half hours work.

We pay about 600 baht to have our three rai cut each month. That includes labor, fuel and the machine rental. Guy takes about six hours to do it. Had a new guy last month as the regular was busy, and that was expensive as he kicked up rocks and broke two windows.

I bought a Black and Decker mower so I could mow myself. Did so several times until the novelty wore off. Now have it done weekly by a couple of village ladies. Takes them about 3 hrs to mow and trim shrubbery. 300 baht for the pair.

Goat. That is the best idea yet. Sheep - nice one, but c an I get one for the price of a lawn mower?

I think I will just have to get a mower (Anyone know a pensioner being fucked over by the exchange rate and leaving, who has a lawn mower for sale, let me know) or get a monthly deal sorted out. I wonder if any of the cute caddies want to earn some pocket money? 198 at SCC is a cracker.
