    Pattaya Crime

When I look at Pattaya, and put things into a pro and con for the place, there are a lot of points in the Pro section (as in FOR, not as in Professionals...i.e., whores) column. Good butchers shops and western nosh in abundance in the super markets; lots of Golf to be played; sea breezes as opposed to the filth that here in Bangkok we call air; Limited need to ever actually have to speak to or deal with Thais; a 10 minute drive and you are into the country side; the best Cider importer in the land (going to their warehouse is my idea of heaven)... simply loads and loads.

The negatives don't concern me unduly as I am not a huge fan of the hooker scene so don't suppose the russians, lack of taxi's, kiddy fiddler germans, and various nefarious scammers along the yellow brick road that leads to walking street will seldom cross my path. However, when I glance at the local rags and see the pages upon pages of crime it is this that bothers me.

So the question is, on the basis that most of what I read there can be classed as death / injury by stupidity of the people involved, does crime actually impact those who live there but stay clear of the vice areas? If so, how does it affect you? For example, if you lived outside of the main mix up by the reservoir or somewhere a bit further out and seldom ventured into whorezone, would life still have the element of danger to it, or is it simply like living in a seaside town where down the road there are some grotty housing estates that are crime ridden which as you never go there does not affect you?

From your first paragraph, it seems you would be happier in Blackpool

Like any area in the World, Of course you will be safer and significantly reduce the risk of coming to harm if you move to the countryside, dont venture out of your house and keep yourself to yourself

I normally stay well clear of the "bright- side" or the beachfront side of Sukhumvit Road.

What most people on this forum do not realize is that Pattaya, or greater Pattaya is a big city now with an urban sprawl moving eastwards towards the big industrial estates that provide all of the employment for most foreigners that live and work in the area.

Unfortunately along with growth (which is good) crime follows and although I feel very safe here you also have keep your wits about yourself.

^ Sounds lovely. Prostitutes and their punters or urban sprawl. Not my thing but each to their own I guess.

Only been to blackpool once, for 12 hours, all of it I was drunk which was nice. However, if you've ventured out of your bedsit recently, what are your views - have you been mugged? attacked ? stolen from?

(If not, I guess they don't realise you are naam yet....when they do, they will)

I read PDN everyday. From what I read and what others have told me, I will not ever have a desire to go there. It's true that different people have different experiences there, but the negatives far out weigh the positives according to everything I've mentioned.

Do you read it for amusement value the same as I do then to see how a farang has got him self killed that day more often then not by believing that when they step off the plane they become invisible?

Fact is though, like me, you don't live there. I lived there for 6 weeks once, and never actually encountered anything dodgy or nasty at all.

A life which doesn't involve prostitutes and/or urban sprawl. I'm sure that as long as you're not an idiot, Pattaya isn't especially dangerous - it just seems like a really horrible place, if a relatively safe one as long as you're not getting blowjobs from ladyboys or arguing with arseholes who suffer from roid-rage.

Lived there for approx 14 years before recently moving to Chiang Mai. The only things that ever impacted me personally was a couple French low-lifes nicked the staff wages from my Jomtien guest house, and a Hungarian hard man fronted me in my Jomtien cafe. The wages theft hurt.
I used to love Pattaya but it has become a cess-pit with the amount of farang scum there now...... my first move was Pattaya to Jomtien, then Darkside, now Chiang Mai!

One of the negatives I think is that it seems from the press reports I see that you cannot report a crime to the police without running the substantial risk of having your photo, passport photo and full name put on the internet for all to google. Seems to be specific to Pattaya rather than the whole of Thailand.

this does it for me. I live up the road in Bangsaen and drop into pattas just to pick up western food and do some shopping! Just spend a couple of days in the city centre and you'll see it's chav heaven! Full of pikies!

Flood - bolted down there to hide out. When I got back to BK, house hadn't flooded (only one in the road that hadn't) but it took me ages to take down my DIY defences and peeling off gallons of silicone.

Hasn't really been fun city for ten years or so. Like London, the 2000s saw a huge influx of farangs from the lands of the monkeys.

I read the PDN to try and find out if it's a place I'd like to go to visit. As I've said, "according to what I read and here, it isn't a place I'd like to go." Yes, there is a lot of crazy Farangs there and are attracted by a lot of crazier Thai's. IMO

Pussy and more easy pussy. There's also air conditioned shopping centers. And it's inexpensive! Nice to walk on the beach and when your temp. rises, duck into Central festival beach to cool off. I would love to live in Bkk but it's too hot.

I live in Jomtien. In 10 years, we've been burgled once and my wife has been a victim of a motorcyclist necklace snatch & run once.

My next door neighbour is a lawyer. He's had his windows shot out once in a drive by shooting for taking on a particular law case.

Its definitely more excitement that I would normally wish for, but overall not too bad.
