Thanks for all the positive replies

I have just sorted out a heap of new ones so Ill get them uploaded tonight and hopefully get them posted before I fall asleep.

Have to be up in the morning as I just bought heaps of fruit trees to plant in the morning before it gets hot, ie.5.30-6.00
I thought it was a bargain but was it? 30 baht a tree varying sizes 20cm - 1.5m, bought 20 and got 3 free.

Call me gay if you want but the flowers and fauna in PNG was spectacular, not a great hobby of mine but I was amazed at the colours and varieties everywhere.

cool little moth/ butterfly that just kept coming back for about an hour, it's little sucky thing was prodding all over my hands and it felt cold. Couldn't get it on a picture but it was like it was spitting out then sucking it back up, wierd...

Variety of flowers... some with monster bugs...

This thing sound like a chopper out of Apocalypse Now!... Took me ages to get close because it kept taking off and giving me the shits lol

Found the one I was looking for before.

    Pidgin English for beer store...

and more manly things, a pair of DD's. That's Damn Droopy's, no reference to DDog

Those home made tatoos were the common thing for girls in the tribes, apparently the tribes kept the same face tatoos so they new who was in their tribe, but I never saw 2 alike so not sure if it was just crap

How can you not stare when they are shaking in front of you ringing up your groceries ...

    that's all perverts

and a few of the wildlife ones I managed to take.

Pigs or boars were EVERYWHERE! they are still a sign of wealth in the tribes. The more pigs you have the bigger your cock sort of thing. A bit like the westener who drives a top of the range Merc or something.
They still give pigs as part of the dowry in wedding ceremonies.

In New Ireland we had to have a tree cut down as it was interfering with our equipment. This monster of a tree was 60m tall and 12 feet wide at the trunk. If greenpeace knew about it they would have chained themselves to the tree to save it. Anyway, we had to speak to the land owners, tribal leaders etc and in the end had to sacrifice a pig, put a heap of cash on it and hold a ceremony for the spirits with the witchdoctor.
Oh, and the next day after it was cut down (which fell on, and blocked the only road on the island for hours lol) we were faced with a compensation claim for 1200 small trees which it landed on, they said it was a plantation lol.

an eagle taking off from the road...

Eagles would often float above your car as you drove along and swoop down on the little animals that you never even knew were there as they got scared and ran. they would come up right in front of you with little critters hanging in their talons, fantastic! Eagles using US for hunting.

    A sea Eagle soaring above...

and a close up of the original shot...

I love this picture, wish I had a real camera with all the lenses.
Probably would've been robbed in PNG anyway

This little crab was eating ants! I never knew it was on their diet but he would run around and eat these big red ants with big heads. You could actually see him holding them in his claws and chomping them up... Wish I had a few of them in Thailand to cull those big fecking red ants that live in mango trees. Taste nice (lemony) but fuck me do they bite!

Got salt water in my camera on this trip, but still, you can see this flying fish. First time I have seen them and they were flying every 30 seconds or a minute as the boat scared them. Some would skip along the water for 20-25 meters, cool!...
Also, can't see it but they glittered in the sun, a funny kind of blue green sparkle.

The local art work was fantastic as well, wish I ahd more photos but here's the few I took..

Cool art in Mt Willem Hotel, Kundiawa...

This hotel has a balcony labeled 'Million dollar view' and it really is but the photos just don't give it justice.
PS. Wednesday nights is ladies night there

This is the departure hall wall in the airport in Port Moresby, the capital...

and finally a weird statue of a woman squeezing her tits, this was in the toilet in a bar in Rabaul, bizarre!...

As most moths are pretty dull in color, this one piqued my interest. Turns out to be a Hoop Pine Moth. This family of moths is considered a pest and is one of the targets of Australian quarantine procedures.

Family Geometridae; Species (40 or so known)

"This is one of a genus of about 40 species, all with bright metallic colours that are quite unlike any other Geometer moths. The sexes are alike, although females tend to drink nectar from flowers while males tend to feed on rotting animal and vegetable material found on the ground"

"... feed on hoop pine (Araucaria cunninghami) causing extensive damage in plantations......."

"...found in the highlands of Papua New Guinea...."

Many moths/butterflies will "drink" the elements needed for survival or reproduction from whatever source is available. In some cases the salts and other minuscule elements excreted from our bodies are just what the doctor ordered.

This is why you will often find butterflies landing on dog shit or other manure left by animals. They must have the nutrients to survive.

    Great thread and photos!

lol, thats where I speant most of my time. Used Mt Hagen as a base and took police and armed patrols every day into the southern highlands which was a bit hairy to say the least.
Never got many pics down the southern highlands as I used to travel light for obvious reasons. Wish I had a photo of the 6 police with M16s that headed our convoy
When were you in Mt Hagen as I was there from June to October last year?

^off and on from July and most of Oct2007 -Jan 2008

This sign was a laugh, most businesses have security companies contracted to protect them but who ever made a security company named like this must be insane...

A group of kids that appeared from nowhere after a gave a couple some sweets, its as if they were up the trees watching to see what was going on then, WOOSH, kids everywhere...

a group of guys doing a tribal dance, not sure of the occasion here...

This was part of the journey up to Mt William (Mt Willem) which is the highest peak in PNG in the Kundiawa region, Eastern Highlands...

    further up the track...

The track ahead, not much room when you meet other cars, truck on this road and even 4x4 doesn't cope with half the hills. There's always locals with a rope waiting at the bottom of a hill to hand pull you up! 20 tribal guys built like tanks pulling a 2 tonne truck up a hill is an unforgettable scene...

awesome views from the road though, that's a long drop off the road on the left for a few hundred meters, the car wouldn't stop rolling until you were in the water i reckon, was a hairy drive...

some locals near the top, they always came to look what was going on and most of the time very friendly. Notice the lack of shoes? 70% didn't wear shoes and it wasn't smooth ground they walked on! Must have had feet like leather...

and some selling there fruits, sugar cane and bettle nut by the road...

more kids on site with us, not many bush knives in this region but it was rumoured to be bad, personally I thought Eastern highlands was pretty easy going...

Dug up a few more pics from PNG

This is a few from the 6 hour drive from Lae to Madang (Madang is a beautiful seaside town with nice people, unlike Lae which is a shit hole!)
A nice drive to get away from Lae

The flat lands of the sugar empire "RAMU Sugar" Must be a glacier valley or something similar as you can see the highlands in the distance and below it is just flat for 100-150 km along this road.
Now they are moving the sugar empire else where (even the refinery!) as they are changing to palm oil for the whole of the region...

This was a pleasant view on the road, had to be quick to get this pic taken
If you can take your eyes off her body you can see the way the women carry heavy bags. a long teather on the top of their head, ouch...

A stop off here to get some refreshing coconut, always stayed cool even in the swealtering heat and tasted like it was fizzy???

The sign on the dashboard of the rental car...

Coming up to a fjord (spelling?)
First time I came upon this it was 3am in the rain and I couldn't see a thing, was going pretty slow over this as there is a 70cm drop on one side...

and a few km on further you come up to this bridge.
Railings on one side only, shitting myself going over this in the dark rainy night.
Looks cool in daylight though, different huh. must have been to save money??...

The bridge is maybe 200m long and only big enough for one vehicle.
Thats no problem but the design of the bridge means the hump blocks the view of the far end so until you are 50m into it you dont know if anything is coming!...

It's a hell of a drop if you miss judge the edge!...

Further up the road the scenery is just beautiful, everything is so green.
Sure beats Issan in the dry season...

Madang coast line, not much in the way of beaches, mostly rocks but still lovely to go and sit and relax with a beer in the evening...

Some form of albinism was really common in PNG. I thought it was fashion and people were bleaching their hair but it turned out to be natural.

and more locals hanging out, not much to do here for the kids and there were kids EVERYWHERE! never seen so many children in one country before...

this kid was happy that I gave him a 'stick' of strawberries^
After I gave some things to the kids, the women of the tribe heard about it and came up with bags of fruit and veggies (must have got about 15KG in all) for me to take away.
It was a happy day and a nice change. They weren't all bad (only 90% lol)

Another first for me, when I first saw these hanging in the market I thought it was a unique kind of strawberry the grew in bunches...
    CB = IDIOT!

    just chilling...

Some locals carrying the kit up the hill for us.
Little bit similar to Thailand here, men standing around doing bugger all and the women working like dogs.
They hand carried EVERYTHING up this hill as even 4x4's couldnt go up this road.
concrete, sand, tower steel, 2 generators (ok the men did these) etc,
They were well paid for it though but I imagine it all went on piss ups for the men and that would have been bad for everyone as once they get pissed they rape and beat up the women, sad!

notice the woman in front, bare feet walking over that crushed rock, ouch!
