Bora Bora - Fairest Of Them All?

Throughout my entire life I have never seen a place as beautiful as Bora Bora. I have traveled quite a bit and have visited the following islands:

Cape Verde Isles (Coast of Africa)
    Hawaii (Big Island only)
    Guam
    Japan
    Phillippines
    Taiwan
    Puerto Rico
    Guadeloupe
    St Thomas, VI
    St. Martin/Marteen
    St Lucia
    Gernada
    Aruba
    Barbadoes
    Jamaica
    Dominican Republic
    Capri (Coast of Italy)
    Tahiti
    Koh Phuket
    Koh Chang
    Koh Samet
    Koh Phi Phi

Bora Bora was the fairest of them all.

Has anyone been to an island they believe is more beautiful than Bora Bora?

If so, I would like to hear about it and maybe some day visit it.

    Thanks.

I'd put the rainy side of both Kaui and the Big Island up there with Bora Bora. The Whitsunday Passage in the Barrier Reef too. El Nido area in Palawan, Fils, as well. Come to think of it, Phang Nga bay rates a mention too- although you can't escape the tourists, and Phi Phi island is a dump that should have been be a paradise.

Funnily enough, talking about islands, last night I saw a doco presented by Martin Clunes. He was out visiting all sorts of islands in the British Isles. One island that he visited that stuck me as quite attractive was the island of Islay. There's a sort of barren windswept beauty to the place.

As a bonus, a top notch whisky is produced there as well.

Do I have some certificates somewhere proving my ownership to a few square feet in Islay ?

Beauty as always is in the eye of the beholder so I think we need to know why the OP has never seen a place as beautiful as Bora Bora.

I am always skeptical of such statements why because of what it says. Used to work with a guy who would always berate any ideas of other team members by saying things like "I've never seen one of those that worked" or similar such statements implying experience or wisdom. In the end we figured it was all BS and simply that he had never seen one. Very clever in context.

So for Bora Bora is it scenery, the lighting, the strength of the alcohol, the cuteness of the girls, the clarity of the water, the luxury of the accommodation. "I sit on my balcony looking down at the fish in the assure water, sipping the perfect Tom Collins as the wind wafts the palms on the beach with the mountains in the background" etc.

I like the scenery around Lake Toba on the ISLAND of Sumatra ( not Pacific) or the clarity of the water and wreck diving around Guadalcanal or Malaita. Now probably as messed up after after wars, earthquake, tsunami etc., Treasure Island off Fiji has wind wafted palms etc. Russel Island NW of Guadalcanal has an isolated quality to it.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

It is and I have never been to Bora Bora (out there in the middle of nowhere), but I believe a few islands listed below would be a much better vacation spot.

    Fisher Island
    Manhattan Island
    Key Biscayne
    Miami Beach
    Florida Keys

And if you don’t mind Island fever

Maui and Oahu (these two for different reasons than the ones above)

I'm a big fan of Hawaii (why oh why didn't the poms keep it), but for natural beauty I'd have to say the big island & Kaui surpass these places, because they are too dry.

Had many enjoyable hours (weeks) sailing around the whitsundays and the bay of islands in NZ.

Advantage of both is that you are not more than 1/2 sail away from beer.

Cocos Island off Costa Rica and the San Blas Islands were stand outs for me.

But Bora Bora is really something as well

The Bahamas is treally very nice when you get away from the tourist trail, plenty of options there but your vessell will be draft restricted. Amazing being just 60 odd miles from mainland USA.

Trinidad was great for myself, but as other posters here say its up to you. what no Bali? West coast of Mexico is also great. Coast of Peru along the Pan American Highway is a wonder as is most of Venezuela. Kodiak Island is pretty neat if you like the cold weather.

I was told that Burma has over 1,000 islands? When it gets more user friendly I'm going to scope it out.

Palolem In Goa was nice, but I find the beach/sea boring. More into hills and forests.

Thanks for all the suggestions and pictures. I will try and find some pictures of Bora Bora that I took and post them.

I've been to Miami Beach and a few of the other spots mentioned, and IMO they don't come close to Bora Bora, but to each his own.

And, yes, I am a tropical kind-of-guy, and visiting Greenland, Vancouver Island, or anyother island that gets below 20 degrees C (50 degrees F), is not a place that I would consider beautiful.

I see, that the link rated Bora Bora as number 2, although that particular picure doesn't do it justice.

Meanwhile, what I thought made Bora Bora so beautiful was the way the sea changed from typical blue-green, to blue, to dark blue creating three very distinct rings around the island.

Also the lush tropical foilage, with mountains running very close to the beach, created an almost fantasy look of a tropical beach.

As for the booze and the women (which really isn't what this thread was about) are not all that great, as the women get big (I mean really big) at a fairly early age, and the beer (Taboo, and Tahiti), although strong is not that tasty in my opinion.

I visited Mauritius about 25 years ago and thought the beaches particularly on the North of the Island very beautiful.

Not to mention the Islands of the Whitsunday Passage off the coast of Queensland Australia are absolutely wonderful.

I am also told that Boracai in The Philippines is worth a visit.
