    Nan Provincial Roads 1216 - 1217 - and 1028

I am interested to know if anyone in our TD Travel Forum has ever driven from Rong Kwan off Hwy 101 to Na Noi, via Provincial Roads 1217 > 1216 > 1028? It appears to be a lot shorter than going all the way up to Wiang Sa, and then back south to Na Noi via Rte. 1026 - which is the so called preferred way.
Family and friends tell me one must have a 4 X 4 vehicle to manage the steep inclines, the windy and poorly maintained road, and at times actual large pot holes and road obstructions. Thanks in advance for your inputs and viable feedback.

A few years since I traveled that road.
It's OK for a 2WD pickup (dry season) until you get close to the Nan border then you need 4WD for a bit until the road improves again.

On the Phrae side of the border is a missionary for the Yellow Leaves Tribe.
There will be someone there who speaks English if you get stuck.

    Thetyim,
Thanks for your reply. I hope the locals will improve the road conditions by the time we plan to use it in December/January. BTW - We too heard about the Mabri or Yellow Leave People, but never actually saw any of them in all the time we re-visited the Nan/Phrae provinces. My brother in Na Noi claims to have taken in a young man/boy who is slightly mentally challenged, and who is supposedly a descendant of the Yellow Leave tribe. But no one really knows for sure. (???)

The missionary is run by an american named Gene Holt.
He is a very friendly and amiable man but his mission involves caring for Mlabri in a village.
This is totally the opposite to how the Mlabri live naturally.

They are a few Mlabri still living the nomadic life.
If you want to see them then start by asking at the Maeyom national park.
The rangers there know where to find them if you like trekking.

Oh yes it is an interesting drive.
    Open stream crossings the lot.
Best to take a GPS with you to keep your confidence up.

    Thetyim,
From your last comment I take it a 4 X 4 vehicle is ncessary for sure? Crossing open steams and having a GPS! Wow - that's Marlboro Country for sure! No wonder all my other family members and friends won't drive that 1216, and go the long way around through Wiang Sa and then 1026 South! - Thanks.

Route 1216 & 1028 between Huai Rong and Na Noi

Just wondering if anyone in our forum has by now travelled Routes 1216 and 1028 between the Huai Rong waterfall near main Highway 101 (Rong Kwan) and Nanoi, since I started this thread a while back in 2011?
It appears to be such a terrific shortcut coming from the south on 101, and wanting to travel east towards Na Noi - and thereby bypassing Wiang Sa.
I heard the road is a "real bear", but it may have been improved by now???
    Cheers and Happy New Year.

    Question Routes 1216 and 1028

Just wondering if anyone up in Northern Thailand has travelled these two roads, since I posted more than a year ago?
Everyone previously claimed it's a real bear to drive this to Na Noi! Thanks for anyone's inputs.

If you scroll down a bit they talk about the 1216. Sounds ok. But don't hold me to it
Also on the map it looks like good road This is further up than Rong Kwan (just spent the night there last night)
    Nan Provincial Roads 1216 - 1217 - and 1028-na-noi-jpg

It will definitely be slow and curvy but very scenic. Here's another link. I'd say no worries. Please report back if you do it.

Nowadays, you hardly find a bad (laterite) road in Thailand, even in a last village...
