Lamphun - Lampang. History and Rivers.

Went for a day trip circuit from Chiang Mai, through Lamphun and back up through Lampang. Some pics and other interesting stuff...

The history of Northern Thailand is fascinating and Lamphun is an interesting little province. Is was the control centre of a pre-Lanna kingdom, Hariphunchai, founded by locally reveered female ruler, Jamadevi.

Jamadevi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The town centre square / wai-ing is well set up and has plenty of info, as well as a smiling face to sell you stuff. I like the stone carving artwork.

The riverside out by the city square is a good place for a stroll and a few restaurants serving decent food.

We didn't actually go into Lamphun city this trip, been there a heap of times already. The above pics are from a previous trip. The route 106 runs straight from Chiang Mai to Lamphun city, then all the way through Lamphun into Lampang. Though is a small and congested road for the city to city bit. To make a good day of it, we left at 6am and took the superhighway (route 11) and joined up with route 106 at the town of Pa Sang.

Destination I was interested was a place called Li, a predominately ethnic Tai-Lu area. On the map it looked interesting, the only major point on 106 before joining the main highway network, but there wasn't much there. After Li was nice mountain country, going through Mae Ping National Park. Driving through mountains then you catch glimpses of the wide river way down in the steep valley. Looks like a cool place if you were going through on a kayak or something. Didn't attempt to get down there but might go back in the dry season.

This is somewhere near where the Ping and Wang rivers meet, making up the 'blood veins of Thailand', draining all the way down into the Chao Phraya. I couldn't actually ascertain what river we were looking down upon from the end of route 106. Pretty sure this was the Ping.

    Li and route 106

Heading towards Li, this Eucalypt stand reminded me of back home in Oz.

Pretty major Lamyai growing area too...

Then we get to Li. Like I said, not much there.

Though there is a rainbow above, so bound to be a good day!

Plenty of signs of Takky supporters around. Neglected to get snaps of all the signs along the road where the chopped out Abby's head with an axe or something.

Then we head into the mountains and Ping national park, where it pissed down rain on us for a little while.

    Plenty of lush, dense foliage...

We catch some glimpses of the big river down below.

Then back to the river flats and main road around Thoen, Lampang

And onto road AH2, which will take to Lampang city to join onto highway 11 and back to Chiang Mai

    Wang River, Sop-Rap rest stop

We stopped at this nice little rest stop along the highway, looks like a pretty major swimming area in the dry season. Not much sign of activity though it was only 10 AM at this time.

Missus had a nap in the car so had plenty of time to take snaps here

Plenty of empty stalls so it must get busy here...

No place for Thai kiddies to be swimming in the swollen river though I'm sure they do...

Always loved that region. Did a bike tour through there about a month ago. Will see what pics I've got when I'm less lazy.

I hear ya. Posting pics here (using TD hosting) is time consuming. Quiet time of year for me though, so plenty of time for travel and playing on the forum. Also off tourist season, so everywhere is cheap and quiet. Maybe not so good for moto-riding due to all the rain. BT-50 pickup makes it easy going.

    To be continued...

^ Good one Dawg. You're funny after ya had a few.

Looks like the floods took their toll here, and the river is either unusually high, or the people built their stalls in stupid places. 50/50.

    Kho Kha - Dinosaurs

After reaking havoc at the rest stop we made our way up to Lampang city. I was hungry as we were passing signs to a town called 'Kho Kha', missus was interested as they advertised an OTOP shop and pottery, so we pulled in to check it out. Surprisingly nice little town, nestled on the banks of the mighty Wang. Looks like a few guest houses / hotels along the river would make a good night stop over alternative to Lampang, about another 30-40 kms up the road.

The main street had a large eatery area, suggesting that this town is popular with local (Thai) tourists. I had Pad kapow moo gob khai dow (fried basil with dried fatter pork and crackle and a fried egg on top), filled up for 35 THB, better than average for food out in the sticks. If I come back will defo spend the night in this town.

This is the OTOP store, pretty piss poor effort if you ask me. Wasn't much doing so we walked around a bit before leaving town.
